If it's brand new and the store will allow you to exchange it for a different reel, I would get a better model and pay the difference to get a more solid reel. If they will only allow a straight exchange, then go for it. If they tell you to send it to the manufacturer for warranty work, then that sucks because you'd be without a reel during the steelhead run. If that's the case, I would spend the cash and get a better reel and when your abu comes back from the manufacturer, use that as a spare.

My 2 cents.

Ya, I took it back this afternoon and ended up getting my money back! I'm using a Daiwa as my spare right now. It's and open face so i'm looking into getting a whole new rod and reel. But a baitcaster. I think I might make a trip to BPS to see if there is any good deals on a combo right now.

It's an open face reel, and when I lift the metal thing to cast it wouldn't flap back down after I started reeling the bait in... I have a back up so I just ended up taking it back. I'm sure something broke inside because it was working perfectly before and then it started doing that. I would have to manually fold it back down to start reeling in the bait again.

Just FYI it sounds like the spring that closes the bail(metal thing) went it happens to me often on lower end reels if I fish/use them too much some places will replace the spring for $10-$12, or you can do it yourself just need the part. I hope it doesn't happen to any of my reels thsi year but I've got plenty of backup.

The crappy thing about it is, it was my first time using it and bad things already happen! I didn't want it to be a lemon, (If you know what I mean), starting off the year. But that is great info about it being the spring. Thanks, because I'm sure this is common with other reels.. Always good to no that there are ppl on here that can help out with broken equipment.

Thanks for all the post guys!

Hey!
A whole new combo after just one incident! lol!
Wow Sweet! I guess we will be making a trip up to BPS this weekend?!
But I think you did the right thing in getting your money back and just using your old reel for the time being... shopping around for a deal will be good to gather info/details on all kinds of fishing gear as well!
