Has anyone been fishing at Lake Scugog? I remember reading about some kind of a mysterious problem that was affecting the fish there lat year.
I'm sure Scugog is safe to fish, last year there was some type of koi virus that only effected the carp/catfish family and evenso MNR said that the infected fish where still safe for human consumption.

This did seem to affect mostly carp though, it was some fungus/virus or something, but they did mention that the fish were OK to eat too.
btw, when I was fishing on Simcoe last weekend, I saw about 10 giant dead carp floating around... they were huge , no sores, they looked fine,,, except that they were dead. dunno what happened..

My friend and I were thinking of hitting Scugog this weekend - we've never been there before, and not being an overly experienced boater, I was a little worried about the depth of some areas of the lake and several mentions of the lake being choked with weeds. Are these two things likely to cause issues for an inexperienced boater (we'd be renting from Goreski's or some place)? I've used a boat maybe 3 or 4 times, but I'm still a bit awkward. I'm hoping that trouble areas are usually marked with buoys, etc.

Peebles....Scugog is a failry shallow Lake. Yes there are bouys, but not a lot of rocks like other lakes. Mostly shallow spots & weeds.Watch the weather and repsect other boats you should have no problems.Well, I'm glad to hear that things aren't that bad.

If you get into the weeds try and burn across them quickly. If the motor sounds like it is bogging down, Stop, put into low idle, then put into reverse. (motor may kick up at you so hold down the motor while you give it a shot of throttle in reverse...unwraps all the weeds from the prop.) Once the prop is clear of the weeds, you are off again.
A slow troll with a green Erie Deerie tipped with a fat worm...drag heind you in the prop wash 10'--15' back or so and hold on!. Bass,Walleye or even Muskie will smash it!!! ..but please check the regs to see what is open.
Keep your pfd on and have fun!

BTW,does any1 know if there is any public boat launch at Scugog. Can some1 post google map link.thank you
I usually launch off the tip of the Island... pass the casino, keep going, it turns into a dirt road. there is a launch at the end. no docks though. It's just not very busy compared to the launch in Port Perry.
There is a launch as well if you go east past the causway, past the lights for island road, go another 1-2 kms. On the north side of the road when you see the lake again.. you can launch for free... no dock there either tho.
http://maps.google.c... ... 3&t=h&z=12
this is a link to show the tip of the island.. I don't know how to put arrows on it and stuff though... but you can't miss it. take Island road and go all the way to the end.

I have heard that the OPP have really started cracking down and handing out a lot of lickets for boaters who do not have all the safety equipment.
There is a zero tolerance on the waters this year. Opp even asked me for my operator card! so make sure every boater has a fishing license, safety stuff with working flashlight(they actually test it), op card if required.
