Thank you for the advice, I plan on getting out as much as possible but if I miss the salmon when can I expect the browns and steelies to come in? I am not going to lie I have a big skunked badge going on for the last month, every fish I target seems to smell me coming and I need to get the stink gone!!!

Sounds to me like you got to excersise some Demons.

May I recommend a Ritual? .. Designed to get the "Skunk Off"

First:

You need to make up a very large batch of Garlic Oil , a VERY LARGE BATCH (Crushed Garlic Cloves in Olive Oil)

Second

Bath in it. I mean BATH TUB and get right in there...

Third

As soon as you "Think" the Chinneys have all laid all their eggs and the water is cold .....

Forth

I'd go fishing then

Salmon don't pick marshmellows or roebags off the bottom. Especially out in the lake! They inevitably run into peoples fishing lines because they are constantly swimming around. So....as far as I can tell, it won't matter if the marshmellows are garlic or not...

Yeah I was wondering how can salmon like the taste of garlic? Maybe they like it best in their spagetti sauce.......lol. Sweet toothed salmons, or they grab the marshmallows and have it with hot chocolate.........lol. Just another angler's tale/rumour that somehow started ages ago.

Thanks Rain, I'll save my marshmallows for the camp fire.......lol.

Marshmellows float.. how would something that floats be lying on the bottom?
I guess the company's that make flavoured roe and marshmellows don't know anything and make these products for the fun of it. Lmao

Why are you still not bringing your proper net !!!

I hope you break your line, your rod, slip on rock, wet your shoe, hook a fish with bunch of others like yourself and looking at each other saying... anyone care to bring a net for my convenience ?

(just kidding, but you know what i mean)

Yup and make sure it's a large net! Last weekend some guy offered to net my fish using his butterfly net. Needless to say the fish wouldn't fit inside

I pretty much always bring my net. The problem is when you have a big one on the end of the line and you are all alone on the pier. I had that last night and it was a challenge to get the fish in the net.

Hello, my name is Scott and I'm new to the forum and would like to thank Openfire for this thread. I fish the piers near Rochester and would love to fish the Port Credit pier it looks good. The reason I'm posting is because I ended up losing a monster king salmon off of the Summerville pier in late October. Unfortunately that night I had no one with me and NO ONE was out fishing. I brought my fishing net with me and battled the king for about 20 minutes before he finally pulled the hook before I could net him. Lets just say I was completely devastated that I couldn't net him and no one could help me I wanted to quit pier fishing altogether.

In my neck of the woods we still have kings coming through all the way into early November. Problem is very few people fish past late September-mid October around here. It just angers me that the fishing can be really good later on and the trout pick up as well but hardly anyone is out fishing off the pier at this time. It seems a lot of these people that fish for salmon off piers aren't really fishermen at all and are more like clowns that don't know what they are doing (no nets, using snoopy poles ect) and its a shame. As soon as the temperature goes below 60 degrees they stop coming cause it gets too cold for them LOL!

I'm wondering do you guys get anyone out fishing this late in the year off Port Credit? I would think you guys could at least get some nice trout later on I'm not sure about kings though. Anyways I hope you guys can endure temperatures under 60 degrees better than us tough guys in upstate NY!

I first must apologize for not reading the entire thread,

Open fire, I commend you for a very informative post, IMO, its near perfect.

Again I did not read every single post, but this is directed to everyone,

If you don't bring home a fish for dinner, bring back a garbage bag full of other people's garbage, you will gain respect from true anglers

I'd just like to say thank you for this post I tried for a while to get a chinook from the piers with no luck until i came across this forum I used the advice mentioned especially about timing and had great success landing over 10 and many more hookups over last years season.  Man what a  rush   and as far as gear i use a 9 foot ugly stick light action and i prefer using 20 lb braid but have landed a couple nice ones on as low as 8lb mono on a normal size spinning reel although i prefer a larger capacity reel and have upgraded for this upcoming season .

(just kidding, but you know what i mean)

it is quite understandable that borrowing somebody a net to land there fish can interrupt ur fishing time. however my first year fishing the piers i did not have a proper net as i dont see the need to rush out and buy everything i can possibly buy for every style of fishing that I attempt as the net I own works for me 95% of the time.

so the second year I managed to get another net as there is not always someone close by to lend one,lol it has a short hand but the basket is large enough for kings i landed all the fish with it i either guided the fish to the rocks or used the latters along the piers to get closer.( lol don't do this alone and hand off the rod to someone else) then one night i took a nap in the car and my buddy stayed out there with the net and well lets just say when i woke up he was in the passenger seat sleeping without the net.

now this year we are back to square one chukle. well thank u to everyone who is kind enough to lend a net or even help land a fish for someone like myself it is much appreciated and I realize a net is  important but not having one isnt going to stop me from fishing.

Unless my net is in use I have no problem lending a fellow fisherman/women mine to land a fish. I personlaly think its pretty ignorant to watch someone struggle without the proper tools if you can help them. If the fishing is that good you dont want to have to miss a few minutes leave the netting to them. If they loose the fish meh it's thier issue.

Wishing bad on them joking or not, thats not cool. Who am I to judge?

All I can say is I cannot wait for salmon fishing!
