Hey Guys,

My name is John, and I'm in the Ottawa area. Ok, technically I'm across the river in Aylmer QC, but I use Ottawa as my excuse to join the Ontario fishing forum :)

I've done very little fishing, but have found that this summer I'm going to be living in a cottage on a lake while my wife cooks at a camp/conference center. With ready access to bass a few steps out my door, and a canoe for those times where I've got a few minutes to spare, I figured I should learn to fish. I've been reading everything I can, and chatting a lot with some of the others who have fished that lake to learn as much as possible. Obviously, the real learning will be happening with my line in the water.

I've got a number of other hobbies that share my free time (free time is a relative word, I have 4 kids between the ages of 1 and 8). Most of my hobbies are of the self-sustaining nature, like growing my own food and brewing my own beer. So fishing seemed to be a good extension of those interests.

Anyhow, I've already busted out my first post or two on the gear forum but thought I'd swing by here for an official "Hello".

Cheers,

John

Welcome, and like you said the only way to learn is to go out and do it. Also do some research on your lake if any and see whats in there and what parts are the best to fish. Also read up on the MRNF regulations in Quebec or the MNR for Ontario if your cottage is here or there, you haven't specified.

Thanks Eric!

I'll be mostly dropping my line in on the Quebec side. According to people that have fished that lake in past seasons, it's mostly bass and pike. And sunfish. Funny how you never see rod and reel manufacturers targeting the sunfish fishing crowd. I think there's some serious untapped audience there.... :)

I decided to make sure I was legit, and got myself a licence and know my dates for my zone. Guess thats the difference once you have kids, I've got 8 little eyes watching me. I want to teach them as I learn about the different species seasons, and why they exist to make the lake sustainable, etc.

cheers,

John

No problem man. Sunfish is not a very fun fish to catch and not good to eat I have heard. But Pike and Bass is good. Sounds like your good to go man. Remember have fun and post pictures!
