Hey guys,

I am attempting to learn how to bait cast this year. I was wondering if there was any baitcasting vets that could share some tips? Also what situations would it out perform a regular spinning reel?

Hi,
I am quite new to baitcasters too, but the way that i have started was by watching some youtube videos. There is tons of them that show you how to use it. More importantly is setting the brake properly to avoid those nasty twists.

In my understanding the baitcaster has 1 huge advantage - line size. While most spinning reels take up to 14lb test, baitcaster can take 30 lb thick line.

Gurus, please correct me if I am misunderstanding....

Learn to set the brake. That will save you hours of backlash time. A tip take the lures you plan to use. Note there weight, this is very important. Attach one to your line and turn the brake fully on. Keep your thumb on the spool and slowly ease the brake off. When the lure drops to the floor and the spool does not keep going remember the number it is. Do this to different weights. Now when you cast it will much easier, give you more controll and will greatly reduce the possible backlash. A pro taught me this and it made the world of difference with my casting.

I had posted this in the old forums, and am too lazy to copy and paste the whole thing.

But this link is to my blog article with instructions on baitcasting.

If the mods remove the link, send me a pm and OI can send you the link.
