What's the rating of your fly rod? I've got a 7wt, but I'm afraid it will break. Lol.
7wt will do just fine =]

nice pig, cant wait to get into some action. Still after my first pier salmon not leaving piers till i get one.
Keep at it G. It is only a matter of putting in your time. Everyone throwing the same thing try changing to a Rapala J13. If I am down there I have a few to spare.
J13 usually gets a larger fish.
Last year all my fish at the pier were caught on crank baits and none on spoons go figure. One day I lost 5 to 6, J13 and x-raps that is all they wanted that one day.
Keep and close grip on your rod once they hit, its like a mac truck cannot do anything just hang on for the first couple of minutes.
Whatever you do not no touch your drag make sure you have it properly set.
BTW enjoy the fight nothing like a fresh chinny off the pier.

When fighting a big fish be more conscious that it is a 7 wt, if you know how to fight salmon correctly, you should have no problem landing 20+ pound salmon.

I shall giver a whirl with the 7 wt. I've heard I should probably use a 9 wt for the big fish, but I will try. I'm thinking itnmight be comparable to fishing an ultra lite setup.

I know that, I was just wondering what type of rod, reel, and line he was using. I was going to order an 8 weight fly rod but there currently out of stock on the website. So, I have to wait til october 28th, I might just go with the 7 weight because it would be better fishing for salmon now, then waiting a whole year.
