My local creeks got a couple of fish jumping and staging at the mouth. But its not like most creeks where there is a pier and its deep and you'd just cast spoons.

The mouth is fairly shallow, probably 8-9 ft, and kind of wide 30-40 m. How would you fish for salmon here? Would you use spoons or other types of lures or stick to float fishing like you would in the creek?

:P

If they're within casting distance and the water is that shallow, I'd try out a J13 or something.

Will Jointed Rapala's actually catch Salmon? Does the water need to be calm or will they work in faster moving waters as well? Might have to hit my local backyard creek and try.

Jointed works really well. When fished at river mouth... it will usually catch the BIGGER fish.
Condition don't matter too much.

You can use it in the river pool aswell. If you see salmon in a pool,,, just cast'em out and hold in a pool in there is a flow, if not do a slow retreive.
Smaller size jointed is fine for rivers.

at piers everybody use J13.

They work pretty well. Like MikeyMikey said, they'll usually take the larger fish though. Works just as well as spoons. Sometimes even better.

Yes, you can look forward to that. This one time I almost got hit in the head by this guy using a bell sinker above a giant spinner. Looked like it weighed a pound and a half.

Do not use a j-13 they do not work LOL

All my Salmon off the PC pier were on a J-13 or a 3/4 oz X-rap. None on spoons go figure that one.
Lost many crankbaits last year I was broken off many times

Ask Mikey he knows....

Especially when all they see are spoons it would make sense to switch to J13's. I might even go as far as painting one glow in the dark.

You must be retrieving it a bit too close to the surface. They'll really think it's a fish.

Start reeling as soon as it hits the water, or wait until there are no seagulls on the area.

Not to change the subject too much, but isn't that like waiting for the Leafs to win the cup??

Very true. The seagulls will mostly go for the brighter J-13's though, but If there are seagulls diving for it then the lure is most likely running too close to the surface. With the J-13's I keep my rod tip down reeling not too fast. With spoons I would keep my rod tip as high as possible letting the lure slowly flutter over the fish. Of course common sense will have to come into play when fishing different areas...

As a general rule you would want the lure either at or slightly above the fishes level.

I have a question on the Jointed Rapala's... what depths works the best as these lures are made for different diving depths....
Would the ones in the diving ranges 5-15ft work best at piers?
