WRONG!!! Ever wonder why the portion of the Bronte from Hwy2 to Rebecca is closed???? Very soon it will be closed from 2 to QEW, and possibly beyond.I unfortunately, don't agree with this. Why hide? "Media will blow it out of proportion, and show most fisherman to be neandrathalls" That's exactly what many people act like when it comes to salmon unfortunately. I think it's about time they know exactly what many of us do. We need a change right?

No,In class training, and a test needs to be done, and passed before becoming auxiliary officer. Volunteer officers are always in twos. This prevents most situations. Also,if the pair are visible this will thwart most wrong doings by most of the culprits.I was thinking about that too, but there are several problems:
1) The vounteer would not have the proper training to deal with the situation in a professional way. What if the the volunteer gets into the fight,
2) The voluntters, being fishermen themselves could misue their power, say even if wants to fish a hole that somebody is on it, he could find an excuse to drive the person off that hole! Or he could be recieving some sort of fishermen to pass by (bribing)
I guess these are the reasons why general public should not be involved (as volunteers) in plice work or like that. Acting as a group of few volunteers may solve the above problems though
I doubt any of the volunteers would misuse their powers, as they themselves would most likely be true sportsmen who actually care about the sport. I say the ministry should try it. Something needs to be done about the crap that goes on far too much in the GTA.

some of these people are taking row to sell. Where do you think tackle shops, and especially those vending machines are getting their stock from?
I know the tackle shop I get it from gets it from a fish farm, I feel alot better using fish farm eggs than taking a fish and gutting it for its roe. If you are going to keep and eat a 5 year old rotting 25+lb salmon then I guess go ahead and keeps the eggs. But if not there are other ways to get eggs.
The media getting a hold of, and publicizing the story is not a good thing. Media will blow it out of proportion, and show most fisherman to be neandrathalls, without concern for anyone but their own headlines, and ratings. The tree huggers, and animal rights lovers will slam us shut faster than we can blink!!! This should be kept out of the publics veiw, and instead printed in bold in the fishing regulations handbook. Also little warning signs on the counters at tackle shops, and wherever licenses are sold may help prevent some of this crap.
There is a serious problem on Bronte it would be tough to blow it out of proportion. The amount of salmon gutted for their roe is staggering. I think the ideas you have are also good but showing it to the public might educate some of those poachers who dont read the regs.

They say that specific section is closed due to a few non-poaching related reasons. Closed sections aren't what I had in mind, but if it means more law enforcement on tribs then I'd be all for it.
RESTRICTING AREAS is NOT THE SOLUTION (EVER)
*Why ... because it leads to MORE removal of OUR LIMITED FREEDOMS we still have left for ACCESSING PUBLIC LANDS.
Get more enforcement, raise the fines.... send Monkeys to space (LOL) but DO NOT RESTRICT ACCESS!
My opinion.

that section was closed for littering.
Little Rant:
We (fishermen) are in the MINORITY here.
The biggest PROBLEM is the EVIDENCE left behind.
Follow me on this one...
In NO WAY do I Condone or Promote abusing any of the REGS but:
-When the SLIT DEAD BODIES are left in the open.
-When the Timmie cups, fishing line, and other garbage is left
it just begs for dragonian measures to be implemented. (doesnt mean there fair or make sense)
In comparison: My local park (Golding) has TONS of Mcdonald bags and garbage left by the rude School Kids and others, ALL the time!
Then the City Workers clean it up and chalk it up as "lazy ass kids etc." ( On our tax dollars by the way)
But: are they gonna close the park? (NO) Ban the HighSchool kids? (NO)
When it comes to FISHING, we all need to be EXTRA CAREFUL cause the MAJORITY is just looking for an EXCUSE to RESTRICT the Sport and it's access.
Not FAIR... but a reality.
Unfortunately, some BAD APPLES can hurt it for all of us.
In the past week .... I've been dealing with a bunch of "RENT O COPS" down at the HarbourFront telling me that I can NOT FISH on these PUBLIC LANDS.
Are you kidding me?
I do not litter, dont bother anyone, be respectful
The Police, Marine Unit, EMS are all cool with it.
I've looked into the bylaws and there are NONE.
So... I have politely explained this situation to the RENT O COPS and told them to contact their supervisor & police if they really feel the situation warrants further discussion.
Needless to say, I have still been able to ENJOY the vast opportunities the harbourfront has for RELAXING FISHING.
However, if there were DEAD SLIT OPEN SALMON all over the place, Garbage..... and any other NOTICEABLE CRAP, I can gaurantee you that in about 10 seconds the Harbourfront would be CLOSED to FISHING.
Not fair but a REALITY.
I am not a saint, never said I havent broken any rules.... know everything ... blah blah.
But ....i DO NOT try and PROVOKE a very Fragile situation.
CLEAN UP, BE NICE, FOLLOW the RULES, TALK to the nice PEDESTRIANS (Educate them)
We are all ABASSARDORS of our SPORT

Down at the Etobicoke Creek mouth on the summer, I inquired about the fishing there and a lifeguard told me that fishing is not allowed from shore in the city of Toronto, only fishing from a boat is allowed. I guess not everyone knows the fishing regulations correctly.

to get ready for trout season?I'm no fisheries biologist, but it seems strange to me that we're not even allowed to target bass out of season, or pike, or a number of other species, because it interferes with their spawning. Yet while these fish are heading up river specifically for that purpose we are allowed to basically rape the resource. Can anyone tell me why?

It's not that we're a bunch of pussies it's just that nonconfrontation sometimes is the only way that you can guarentee yourself a peaceful day of fishing, fights have broken out over less, have you ever been smelt fishing? lol. Maybe to say it loud and embarass the litterbug might cause him to dig in his heels and the day could turn out very bad, instead, if you were to walk over and pick up his garbage without saying a word, that might be enough embarassment for him to not do it again. I know that most of us have to much pride, including myself, to stoop and pick up somebodies garbage in front of him but it sure beats the other sceanario of ending up in jail on what was meant to be a nice day of fishing. This is something that a wise old man (my dad) once told me. This goes for litterbugs but as far as snaggers go and fish slitters...hang em...on the spot lolIt's high time we sportsmen took our sport back. If you see someone catch a fish, gut it, and throw it on the bank say something....say it loud enough that other sportsmen in the area hear you, as they will back you up. Snaggers, same thing. Say something. Since when did we sportsmen become such lovein pussies?
