On the 'eve of my last steelhead outing i was tying my pre-tied leader onto my mainline when the Micro-Swivel (Raven XXS) FAILED!

I had tied the knot and was just clinching it down when the swivel just came free. I use a 6lb fluoro leader to 10lb mono mainline.
This means that the swivel busted at a rating under 6lb fluoro!

This wasnt the first time Ive had this happen either. I can recall twice last spring snapping off on logs, then reeling in my float expecting to put a new leader/hook on, then seeing that the swivel is what had failed.

Has anyone had this happen to them with Raven swivels or ANY swivels?
(all swivels were new...not old re-used beat-up junkers...)

I was under the impression that raven was a leader in Stream-Fishing Terminal Tackle?

Can anyone recommend a comparable swivel? Ive never had one break while fighting a fish, and dont want that to happen either!

Ive had this happen to me with the microswivels that were made in china LoL bought them at an asian tackle store for 99cents a pack now that i use ravens ive never had one fail i even landed a 30plus pound salmon using 8lb main 6lb lead under a float and i had this sucker on for a good half hour before landing it. I didnt even retie after that but i didn't catch any more fish either LoL

Must have been a bad swivel. I use raven micro 4xxxxs and have never had an issue. As Thangza I also have landed many large salmon and have never had a problem. I use two swivels in every set up, only time they have ever broke was because I cut it with my clippers. lol

I use mustad micro swivels with no problem yet. They are 30lb test, plenty strong,I also use two swivels. You may very well of had a bad one.

The Mustad swivels are likely your best bet since you have lost faith in raven swivels.

Yah, I'm thinkin bad batch...

Was really just wondering if anyone else has had one fail.
I'm going to pitch the rest of them and reinvest another $3 into new ones :)

You never expect a swivel to fail, I was getting a bit frustrated.

I find with the micro swivels its easy to accidently bend them a bit and make them weak. With my float setup I just use a bit bigger swivel to make sure that doesnt happen, u already have all of those splitshots on the line anyways. If I want to have a more finesse setup I just use a loop to loop knot, or maybe the Uni to Uni which I recently learned to tie from a video posted in another thread.

i like heavy swivels too personally i run a #10 or #12 SPRO crane size doesnt come into play in my mind b/c the swivel is right under your float.......right? my buddy uses raven micros and i constantly breaking them off before the 6 pound seaguar gives out. line to line connections are pretty clean in the water and i think that the swivel may actually ADD spin to your bait making it appear unnatural to fish ran my rigs this way for two years w/ good sucess but was finding myself spending too much on floats. however on longer rigs ie) slaughter pool on the wilmot or many of the pools on the big head i splice in a foot and half of 4 to the bottom of my six when you break off a fish or snag you dont lose all your leader material just splice on a nother shorty and way you go.

I always give my leader set a good strong tugg to make sure I have tied everything properly and the swivel looks good. Sometimes you may have missed a nick in your line that could cost yo dearly.
