Ive only ever been carded by a co once in the years that I have been fishing. The problem is that the majority of the population does not see angling and hunting regulations as a serious issue and dont see a need to allocate taxpayer money to that purpose. I dont see a drastic change in the number of CO's ever happening in my lifetime.

Sad but very true. In 20 years I've come across CO only 3 times. Maybe I should'nt mention the odds of getting caught. But it's a sad rate of inspecting. But then maybe when they see me not doing anything illegal and fairly well equiped they may figure $20 for the licence would be nothing for me and they leave me alone. I agree more CO's probably won't happen. If the MNR expects us to watch the rivers and lakes for them and call them out, then they better have a good response time.

Not suggesting this ought to be one's MO...but...

I've had these experiences as well--I am generally extremely tolerant (to a fault) but if a reckless and disrespectful attitude persists (after some meaningful glances their way) and their rig continues to drift through my setup I pick up their line and snip off the end and ask them "politely" to reconsider their actions. Ok...well it helps if you are a little more "meaty" and provide a more formidable presence.

Most often I just walk to a new spot (when there's fish in the system they are generally all up and down the system), and there are other days...

Lol ChaseChrome. Sort of like my technique. Mine however involves less risk of violence. I accidentally ( on purpose ) catch their lines with mine and then apologize and make some comment about how close they are fishing to me. If they remain then I again accidentally ( on purpose ) catch their line. I try to give the impression that I don't really know what I'm doing and they usually wander away. If accidentally ( on purpose ) catching their line for a third time doesn't work, then I will wander away, of course causing a lot of commotion in the pool as I go. As you said, there are other pools and runs and other fish

Yeah some years ago when I was still living in the Ottawa area I had a favourite steelhead haunt south of the border. October was usually insane--all type of wildlife crawling out from under their rocks to "fish." On one occasion I was nymphing a nice pool when a couple of "good ol boys" come ambling up stream with (and in a good ol american, trailer-park accent) their fishin' poleszzzz. They make a few casts over my line--see there are fish holding and (I poop YOU NOT!!!) proceed to wade straight through 3+ feet of water to, as they said when I asked what the hell they thought they were doing, "get the fish moving." HUH???? This guy moves upstream from me and begins casting into the melee of spooked fish. I lay out a beautiful double haul, catch the top of his pole, and yank the thing out of his hand.......OOOOPS, sorry man that cast got away from me

there is no reason why many anglers cant share a drift if everyone slows down and thinks about what they are doing and their order in the drift. standard etiquit around here has always been the lowest guy in the drifting line get theirs in first then works up from there. As for making space on a pool my buddy swears on plonking the poop out of it with a lure most drifters will leave when seeing this then after letting it rest awhile you can drift it to yourself.

I was at an East trib on Saturday.. mid afternoon, and not a soul around fishing.. (Finally it's too cold for the rubes and loogans).

I was fishing a pool all to myself hitting fish and a young guy walked up.

He asked "Do you mind if I take a few drifts".

I didn't expect that at all. I assumed he was just gonna start fishing. It gave me a little more faith in people.

-I had the complete opposite experience.. Ppl coming up to me and asking how it was going.... then before I can reply.. "plonk".. They start drifting literally in front of me...
It was humorous at first.. but throughout the day, when you have 8-10 ppl do it in a span of 2-3 hours.. it kills the fishing for everyone.

Ive only been at this steelheading thing for a few years but I have already learned to expect this kind of stuff. Certain rivers at certain times of the year will be crowded no matter what and it isnt realistic to expect to keep certain holes to myself. This world, especially the GTA is extremely overpopulated so naturally the rivers are going to be overpopulated as well. Especially if it is a good hole....its a sad reality.

There is one hole I fish often that when I first started fishing the river I would walk past it if there was a person fishing it. Then one day I realized that out of the last 10 or 15 times I was able to get to that hole first not once was I able to fish it by myself. I almost want to call certain rivers city fishing rivers because there seems to be a whole new etiquit when fishing them. Now when I go by that hole I will stop if there is 3 or less people there. If I was fishing a remote Erie trib I wouldnt even fish within 100 metres of a person.

With that being said when I do fish that hole and other people were there first I make sure that I am the person who gets the short end on drift quality. Nothing is worse than when a person shows up at the hole and drifts in the absolte worst spot ruining your drift.

A couple of months ago I was fishing and got a snag and had to retie my line so I stepped about 4 feet from the shore to retie. Two guys come along and stand right in front of me and start fishing. I finish retying and they do not move and keep fishing like I was invisible. Rather than make a commotion I move to a different spot.

That would take some self control, I would definately either walk right through the pool or drift my float on a line that impedes them from making a decent drift.

I think we've all had these experiences at one time or another and Im sure many more if you continue to fish in the years to come.

Personally I would just walk away too not because I cant handle a brawl but because once I get angry and my blood boiling. I cant relax again for the rest of my so called relaxing fishing day. Too me thats just not worth it.

Now if someone was doing something really dumb illegally snagging harpooning ect. Than I would say something.

Okay Ninja, u just cant leave me alone. I probably wouldnt walk through the pool but definately drift through it. What those guys did was pretty darn blatent...If I say we should white out the backrounds and not name rivers will you leave me alone? Im 24 if you must know.
