I felt a hit today, set the hook, had the fish on for a sec then lost it. It followed my bait as I reeled it in towards me, so I dropped my roe back in the water and it proceeded to hammer it in plain view. This fish was hell bent on taking this roe!

I thought it was a little rainbow at first, then I noticed how badly it was decomposing and realized it was a Chinook. So yes, Chinooks do smash roe in the rivers, even when they are decomposing!

Not everyday you catch a Chinook that would make excellent pike bait. It measured 12". If you only fish a few times per season, this would have been a slap in the face. I was fortunate to have many outings for salmon this season, so I was actually quite amused

I think if I had landed it on the first take it would have been less entertaining - seeing it swim up, look around for the roe, and smash it again was probably what made it so hilarious.

Nice...jacks do tend to be mroe agressive than their properly programmed elders. That's got to be the smalled chinny I have ever seen I saw his papa in a trib today and was suprised to see a live salmon in a stream this late in the year.

Coho or Chinook?

Got a PM saying it's a Coho.

This would be even more hilarious if it's a Coho, because I haven't landed any before! Had some on, but they went totally berserk and broke off.

The aggressiveness of this fish is very Coho-like. The fact it's still alive also makes me think it's a Coho. I thought it may have been a male Chinook before, now I am leaning towards female Coho.

I'm going to assume the guy who PM'd me is correct. He didn't specify male or female, but a male Coho would be more red and would have a much more pronounced kype.

woud make sense if it is. i seen cohos cought in mid December but never a chinny this late in the season .

Anybody consider a small hen pink? Kinda looks like one, hard to tell when they're that rough looking

Looks like a small chinny hen to me. Large spots on the back n tail. Tail looks beatup from digging redds.

Sounds like it was fun to catch even though its so small. Always nice to catch agressive fish. No matter what kind of fish it is.

I say coho, spots on the top of the tail, pretty neat though!!!

I thought so at first too.

But only the top of the tail is spotted. It's behaviour is more in line with a coho. Its mouth is not very pronounced due to its size, but I see more of a resemblance to a coho hen than a chinook hen. The size and time of year also point towards it being a coho.

You sure that that's not the much treasured and rare salmotrutta? Maybe the salmotrutta has migrated west a bit.

You wrote a post earlier this year about the salmotrutta. You said you caught it in eastern tribs and that it was a seldom seen fish, very rare. I just wonder if your most recent fish is a salmotrutta, LMAO.

Definitely not an Atlantic nor a pink, its definitely a jack though, and all jacks are male. im guna go with a tiny jack chinny for one reason. The colour, ive only caught one jack coho in my life and it was in full blown coho spawning colours. That fish in its stage (done spawning by now) looks more like a beat up chinny. Also because we've had unseasonably warm temps this year there have been more chinnies in the systems later than other years, not many but there are some still doing their thing. Actually know a guy that lives by port d, he mainly fishes the rocks by the lake bottom bouncing floating roe bags. He msged me about a week ago asking me if I wanted some loose roe he had from a hen he caught out in the lake that week, most people just think chinnies die off early cause we cant fish where the fish are after sept 31st.

Here's a pic of a small male Chinook. Note that the entire tail is heavily spotted. Its jaw proportions are different than the little one I got yesterday. Right click on the image, click Open In New Tab, and zoom in on the tail.
