A Toronto man has been fined $4,500 for illegal salmon fishing at the Old Mill Dam on the Humber River.

Stephan Tymchyshyn, of Etobicoke, pleaded guilty to charges under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act and the Ontario Fishery Regulations. In addition to the fine, his fishing licence has been suspended for two years and his fishing equipment has been permanently forfeited. Previous fishing convictions were considered in handing down this sentence.

The court heard that on the evening of October 8, 2011, Ministry of Natural Resources conservation officers found Tymchyshyn fishing in the Humber River immediately below the Old Mill Dam, in an area that is closed to fishing. Tymchyshyn was found to be in possession of illegal fish snagging equipment and two pails of fish roe.

Justice of the Peace David R. Keilty heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice in Toronto, on December 1, 2011.

Migratory fish, such as rainbow trout and salmon, are vulnerable to poaching when they congregate in the pools at the base of dams while moving upstream to spawn. Signs posted at the Old Mill Dam remind anglers that no fishing is permitted within 60 metres downstream of the dam.

good on the MNR they should put the proceeds from their convictions directly into stream rehibilitation where the offence occurred

so happy when i saw this, u don't know how many times i seen people fish there. I called MNR way to many times they never showed up, but we gotta keep trying these bastards will eventually get busted like this tard.

same here...they used to let alot of stuff slide there back in the day but ive heard they are crack down on it there...its good the humber doesnt have to be a graveyard for fish.

Thanks for posting the great news. I never knew I could also call crime stoppers, it makes total sense. Violation of the fisheries act/regulations is a crime.

2 pails of salmon eggs, that's hell of alot of salmon....the punishment is not sufficient, they should added another 0 to the fine. But atleast they caught him. One of these days I hope a judge decides to make an example of poachers and throw them in jail along with the key.

I'm with you guys. Happy to hear the C Os got him. Maybe the hit in the wallet will teach him ( and hopefully others who hear about ) this a lesson. Unfortunately he sounds like a repeat offender, and too many stories I hear like this do involve repeat offenders. I wonder if initial fines are not enough and that is why people repeat this kind of crime? Maybe first time offenders should face larger fines.
Glad the MNR got their man this time. There are too many people getting away with too much. As far as I'm concerned, more C Os are needed, Ontario is a huge Province and I don't know how many times I have called the tips line and observed nothing happen.

Definately sounds like a multiple offender. I wonder if he was keeping the roe for illegal resale. The fine definately fits the crime, selling illegal roe cant be profitable when you are getting all your gear taken away and being fined $4500.

Nope, I don't think he was planning on selling his roe. Many eastern Europeans use salmon roe for caviar, so I guess he was stocking up for Christmas... Good to see the CO's got the guy, although I see this happening all the time during salmon season without anyone getting caught. I've even seen these morons harpooning salmon in the Credit, gutting them for eggs and dumping their carcasses in the river.

Living in Windsor, we don't see this sort of thing happening. However, we do know what rocks are and how to throw them.....

sounds like he was selling roe to me... buckets of caviar? i know people who eat caviar and they definitely don't eat buckets of it haha.... i mean if someone came up to you on the river asking if you needed to resupply your roe cuz your running out and he would give you a good price telling you he caught a hen the day before and had plenty would you take the bait?.... i hate to admit but i probably would...

Yup, he was using one of these fishing spears mounted on a broomhandle. Saw him hit a couple of salmon with it, one that he just glanced took off downstream in a huge hurry... As for the roe, I've never had any myself, but I know of many people that eat it without suffering any ill effects. I wouldn't know if the toxins concentrate in the eggs, maybe someone can confirm this? Fish-on, you have to take into account salmon snagging season comes along only once a year, so a couple of buckets of roe should last him and his family/friends until the next season. Then again, maybe your right, he might be selling salmon roe and labelling it as "Caspian Sea Sturgeon Caviar, highest quality" lol.

Good call gbdrifter. In a perfect world
Wouldn't Bronte, The Credit and all other tribs be wonderful places if the MNR blitzed them 1 or 2 week-ends each a year. I'm talking about absolute blitzes. All the money going back into that particular trib and the "hood rats" would know that the blitzes are coming, but they wouldn't know when or where, so they may be detered a little. In a perfect world.
I agree with putting money back into the streams and rivers, but also think more C Os should be trained and then hired to make these blitzes happen. Maybe the world wouldn't be perfect, but it would be a little better.
