Port Maitland

I decided to do a little road trip out to Port Maitland, This is where the Grand River empties into Lake Erie. It is also about a mile downstream from Dunnville where the first carp were stocked in Ontario in the 1880's

I was hoping to get there when the weather changed and I hit it just right.


I fished tight to the shore ( in the margins as we carpers say ) with grits pack and a corn puff for a hookbait. I landed a few fish .

The biggest was a 20. What a bugle mouth on this one.

Well done Lorne nice looking catch. Went there on Victoria day with the family on our yearly traditional outing. I know exactly where you were fishing hit that spot a couple times myself right at the corner as you enter and where the concrete walls begin. It's a really a productive spot for carp and also perch. On this trip I had my nephews with us so we targeted the sheephead more as a introduction species for them. Port Maitland has always been a blast and the fishing seems to be getting better now than past years. Would not be surprise if a record carp is caught there in the next couple years as they seem to be getting bigger and not targeted as much there. Maybe I might bounce into you one day out there myself, that will defenatly be a blast if I do.

i fished the same spot 4 years ago in august and had to abandon the outing as funnel clouds formed out on erie and marched right up the river as water spouts....

crazy day it was...i felt like we missed out on something special that day....i will have to try to make another visit and fish the margins...

Yes I often like fishing Port Maitland a cool spot indeed . I have have most of my success fishing in the canel opposed to the shoreline where I've got snagged up one or twice .

Popular spot due to the Boat launch but all and all a friendly spot to fish.
