I find the trilene knot works best for me. It works in most fishing situations and is very easy to tie.

Hi,
after mentioning in one of my post that I tended to lose lures, (in the past) mostly due to bad knots. I poked around in the forum but did not find a thread for just Knots so I'll start one here.
I suspect there may well be a few somewhere in the archives & if there is I'll remove this post.

any suggestions for tying line to (a) Swivel, and (2) Eyeless hook?

I always use the San Diego Jam knot for swivels . If I was using a spade end hook I would use my version of a snell knot basically I would run a length of line along side the spade hook, next grip the lie and the hook at the spade end, wrap the line around the bend of the hook and grip the loop at the spade end, next wrap the free end around the hook 6 or 7 times and hold in place while you pop the loop off the back of the hook, next run the tag end of the loop through the loop at the hook bend and pull on the mainline above the hook till the knot forms on the hook shank ,finally pull tight right up to the spade end. Their are other versions of snell knots ,but that is the only way to attach spade end hooks.

Basically if I'm tying on a jig or a spoon I run my line through the eye of the jig and run the tag end along my mainline. I grip the tag end and mainline 3" above the jig leaving 6" of tag end above your pinch point. With your free hand grab the tag end and bend it down towards the jig . Sip the jig so that the tag end wraps around the doubled lie 5 or 6 times. Finally run the tag end through the loop at the eye of the jig and then through the loop that you formed at your pinch point then pull tight moisten and pull down to the eye.

Run your line through the eye of your hook say 8 inches , next bring the tag end back to the eye so that it catches the hook bend and forms a loop which you are keeping in place by pinching the tag end and mainline at the eye of the hook. Wrap the tag end 7 times around the hook slide your pinching hand down to the end of the wraps and pop the loop from the back of the hook with your baby finger run the remaining tag end through the loop at the back of the hook and pull on the mainline until the knot tightens then moisten with spit and pull on the mainline until the knot rests against the eye of the hook.

hmmmm.... loved lived and died by the IMPROVED CLINCH for mono but started having problems 2 years ago (for whatever reason) and now back to the IMPROVED DOUBLE CLINCH (Trilene knot) for mono and flouro. HAVING SAID THAT.... I always check my line every three casts and give the lure a yank, check for abrasions etc. Still surprised at how, now and then during those "yanks", I can snap off my lure.

Three things to live by, the Holy Trio of fishing if you will: SHARP HOOKS, GOOD KNOT, GOOD DRAG. Amen, brother.

I first saw a version of the San Diego jam knot back in the late 60s on the TV show American angler. John Fox showed how to tie his version of the knot which is almost identical to the present version. I called it the John Fox Knot because John Fox said he did knot know what the knot was called. I watched as Hank Parker praised the merits of the Knot on his show. It was also praised on the In-Fishermen show by Doug Stange. Last year on another US site they talked about the San Diego jam knot ,and had it illustrated and animated on netknots .com. It had the one extra step that I had never bothered with, but I thought why not try including the extra step. I'm not convinced the extra step is necessary but I now try to include it. Last year on this forum someone posted a short video of professional angler Shaw Grigbsy showing the strongest knot he had ever found for fluorocarbon and all he did was tie the "John Fox " knot only with the line doubled up and in the video he stated that he had no idea what the knot was called. All I can say is try it you will love it.

I think its interesting to check out the knots on found tackle.
Whenever I see an reach a hook in a tree or a lure washed ashore, I always check out the knot that was used.

I'd say the clinch or improved clinch is the most popular, I always use a palomar.

Not sure why? Some people have said that it's an ameture knot. It's strong and easy... Try tying some of these other stupid knots when it's freezing rain and 20km wind. No thanks.

And if the next lure you find doesn't have a knot on it.....that dude had a chitty knot!
