There is no debate on which holds more fish. Because they are both ridiculously large lakes with large quantities of fish. The question comes in, with so much opportunity of fishing strategy, what works?

I just spent a week on Lake Muskoka. I fished almost every day, either at sun up or sun down. My target was walleyes because it's nice to be on a lake with 'eyes. I didn't land a single one in about 8 outings. It was ridiculous. Last summer I couldn't keep track of how many I hit. Who knows. So after a few hours of jigging for them I would just cast around under water rock piles and shore for some smallies. I always hit a couple but avg. 1-2 lbs with one or two 3lb'ers. It was a slow week. But that is part of the game.

Then a week later I was off to Lake of Bays. My buddy I was staying with fishes once a year if someone takes him out. I told him we have to get out! He says there are walleyes in the lake (which I know isn't true because I researched, and its hard to take someone's word when they say their previous catches include sun fish, rock bass, and 'big mouth' bass). So he took us out after dinner and said top water is what he has heard rumor to work really well. We find a still cove 5-10 fow and SMASHED small mouth. On jitters. I always had underestimated the power of top water lures. Thats the take home message from this thread. TOP. WATER. ACTION. Holy $#!t!! The first night we both hooked up with multiple 4-5lb'ers ! unreal. The second night, once the action turned on (sometime between 9/ 930) 3 casts back to back to back I landed a 4lb / 3lb / 3lb. talk about action. Unbelievable. I greatly regret never even attempting top water in Muskoka the week before. That second night we each landed 5-10 over 3lb's. In the span of an hour and a half. Here are some pictures of the first ones each night I got. And then one my buddy got who never ever goes out. He LOVED it.

Anyone have any other success stories on either of these lakes with other methods?

Lake of Bays I have had a lot of success on!

We hammered LMB and smaller pike in Wolf Bay (I think is the name) just around the edges of the weed beds off of my buddies dock. We didn't even take off in the boat we just waded around the bay casting along weed beds with a texas rigged crawfish or jigged crawfish and dragged it along the bottom. Also effective at night were Headon Tiny Torpedos.

Moving out into the lake more we took the same approach as before working the docks and weed beds catching pike and bass mostly concentrated in smaller bay type weedy areas as opposed to more exposed shorelines. There is one part of the lake which has a channel running between to medium sized islands and it is quite a rocky area... PIKE CITY!

A kid fishing out of a boat beside us snapped his worm rigged bobber off and I guess the family called it a day and left... Well a few casts later a bobber popped up near our boat! Laughing we said free bobber! and my friends sister reached down to pull the bobber out of the water. When she yelled and almost went overboard when the bobber pulled here straight down to the deck of the boat we both hopped over and helped her drag in the bobber.

I cannot explain the chaos that occurs when you hand reel a 40+ inch pike into the boat unexpectedly! That fish was flopping and smashing tackle and rods all over the place. XD

After that struggle we unfortunately decided to call it a day but had we stayed I feel we could have landed a number of larger pike in that section of water.

Great fishing and times on Lake of Bays, I might be heading up that way in a few weeks actually :)

Good to hear you had some good success out there as well!

A friend of mine has a cottage on Lake of Bays, he is also a member of the sailing club there. When ever I go I always get a few (3 at most) rock bass, never sunfish, never small mouth bass/large mouth bass or pike. Maybe next time I should bring some craws and spinners.

Topwater bass and pike and steelheading, it's hard to compare the two.

That's like asking, what do we need more, water or sleep? We need them both.
