Fishing the credit river in september.

A friend and I have been fishing together for years but have mostly gone to lakes up north targeting pike, musky and bass from time to time. Last year we tried credit river because when we heard such a nearby river was a hotspot for trout and salmon in the fall, we couldnt be happier. Unfortunaetly we left with nothing and knew it was because of our inexperience and lack of knowledge. If anyone would be so kind to help me study up for this september it would be greatly appreciated!. I just really want to learn some basics like, what kind of tackle to use and what not. From what i heard (and what we tried last year) is to put some salmon eggs on a hook and leave it on a float, this didnt quite work out for us so any help would be appreciated! Also are spoons or crankbaits ever used
In seasons like this?

Before Blair goes all crazy on your ass for asking too much and not doing enough legwork on your own, I will answer a few of your questions. (Just kidding Blair, sort of )
1. Crankbaits are used primarily off the piers to catch salmon that haven't entered the rivers yet. Pretty soon after entering the rivers, salmon are very focused on spawning and much less focused on eating. They will definitely hit crankbaits in the river too though.
2. Roe, skein, eggs and flies are the most common baits used for salmon that have entered the rivers.
3. Many people illegally floss and snag salmon that enter the rivers. Do not copy/mimic their tactics as they are illegal.
4. Some trout will enter with the first salmon run, and more will continue to enter. Browns first mostly, and after a month or two you'll start seeing a lot more rainbows. Cohos tend to come later too. Cohos continue to take bait readily throughout their spawn, whereas chinooks become increasingly difficult to catch as they become focused on spawning.

ETA - The Steelhead run has grown dramatically on the Credit River. It would be wise to switch to float gear when the salmon are done.

The salmon run is an exciting and sometimes smelly time of year to be on the rivers.

Any of the major tribs in this area (Humber, Don - thats right, the DON, Credit, Wilmont, Ganny, Bronte will all hold lots of SALMON. The MOST CROWDED areas are always:
Under the Bridge or Railway Tracks.
- Easy Parking
- Deeper Pools
Join the CROWDS of SALMONOID JUNKIES (Old and new)!
Watch every technique in the BOOKS: (Presentations, Set ups .. LEGAL / ILLEGAL ... you name it)
My personal thoughts:
Salmon generally will "HIT" out of aggression .. NOT HUNGER. Many studies have been made in this concern. I take them all with a GRAIN of SALT after fishing the Trib for 30+ years.
Some guys, will not even fish the Tribs for them becuase of this belief. To each their own.
I feel that if a fish is LEGALLY in the REGS and wants to STRIKE my presentation .... then game on! Since I enjoy the "hunt" and Fight ... and typically keep 2-3 for Roe (eggs) each year ... I sleep well at night.
As for LINING / FLOSSING: IT IS NOT AGAINST THE LAW! Seriously. It certainly can be deemed "Unethical way of fishing" ... but NO WHERE in the REGULATIONS does it state that this "practice" is against the law. As long as your set ups is NOT the TYPICAL SNAGGERS GEAR ( 1/2 pound lead weight set in a Drop shot with a HUGE BAITLESS TREBLE) ..... a fish CAUGHT in the MOUTH... is allowable. I dont bring this up to PROVOKE anyone, just pointing out the simple FACT THAT: If a salmon swims past your line and the hook ends up in their OPEN MOUTH, then that is not AGAINST any current regs. PERIOD.
Many other areas of the world (whether that be "Right or Wrong") openly fish this way for SALMON in the TRIBS.
I do not ENDORSE or CONDONE these methods, However ... it is always in the best interests to point out the TRUE REGULATIONS.
If a "Change needs to be made".... I would suggest writing the MNR.

Haha thanks for the advice! And yeah my original plan was to just go to the rivers and spectate on where people are catching and what they are using and just talk to the people around before i start my own journy, but i thought it couldn't hurt to ask around here as well because ive seen many helpful people on this forum, thanks a lot guys!*SMILES*

I do not ENDORSE or CONDONE these methods,
I think using them counts as endorsing and condoning

I for one am taking up the "FLOSS LIKE A BOSS" mindset this year and the "SLIT EVERY GUT AND MOTORBOAT THOSE EGGS" stand point. Not worth arguing, might as well sit back and enjoy the show.
Hahahhahaa! Goin dozers route! Yah I hear yah man, can't wait for the gong show at the zoo this year, fights and cops, broken rods and wet individuals seems to make me happy... I guess I'm a bit of a sadist.
Heh.

It's weird that her Irish setter boots caught my eye before the bikini... Haha!
lol the FIRST thing I noticed was the Water!
Looks like a good pool to fish.
always, keeping an "eye out" for good conditions.
Dont get me wrong, I 'eventually settled on the girl" ...lol
Between what I can see here: Internet, Streets of Toronto, TV ... (and umm.. "my wife") I guess I have become more "unprioritized"
