Hey folks!
A friend and I have been fishing together for years but have mostly gone to lakes up north targeting pike, musky and bass from time to time. Last year we tried credit river because when we heard such a nearby river was a hotspot for trout and salmon in the fall, we couldnt be happier. Unfortunaetly we left with nothing and knew it was because of our inexperience and lack of knowledge. If anyone would be so kind to help me study up for this september it would be greatly appreciated!. I just really want to learn some basics like, what kind of tackle to use and what not. From what i heard (and what we tried last year) is to put some salmon eggs on a hook and leave it on a float, this didnt quite work out for us so any help would be appreciated! Also are spoons or crankbaits ever used
In seasons like this?

Man am I ever looking forward to some late fall and winter steelheading. Last winter was great.

The only reason to hit the rivers when the salmon are running is browns and some early steel, I hate the crowds.

I am as well! *SMILES*
as for the "only reason to hit the rivers when the salmon are running":

Everyone has their own preferences. To each their own, right?
As long as people are following the regs, polite and dont litter .. I wish them the best in enjoyment.

Blair, yup.

Dont get me wrong I used to enjoy fishing for salmon in the rivers, but the crowds and madness associated with them turned me off. Since I can get great steelhead later in the year without the crowds I made the choice last year and waited till the run was done and crowds were gone. This year I am dying to get into some browns so I may battle some crowds and chinnies :)

I did enjoy getting out rigging for some chrome chinnies last week.

last winter we had the pleasure of fishing the Tribs throughout. It was heaven!
Not sure what's in store for this season.

The year before that, the Tribs were frozen like a brick by mid Dec and stayed that way right into beginning of March.

____________ by the way:

Even in the FRENZIED HEIGHT of the SALMON TRIB season - if you can get out REAL REAL EARLY or LATE EVENINGS , the "Crowds" are 1/20 th.
* It was staying late, that also got me into the NIGHT FISHING as well.

You'd be AMAZED that the EXACT same pool that earlier in the day which had 20 guys fishing it, (SPOOKED TROUT or no fish) can be totally different at night.
* The salmon also MOVE the most at night.

This is very true. What I hated the most last year was catching fish that had huge hooks stuck in their back, tails, mouths, etc. Even catching fish with hooks in them dragging yards of like 50LB braid  I remember the bite turning on at night though, as soon as it got dark at one of the pools I was fishing it was fish after fish slamming skein.

Too much madness and non-sense when the salmon are running, fights, snagging, garbage, etc. It really shows how disgusting people can be... :???:

I've been out a couple times in the last few days chucking hardware at the piers trying to get an early start. Still need to catch my first salmon on hardware (not snagging) lol.

September you will find me on the rocks on the pier just to avoid the circus in the rivers. I will only go into the river in October.
Nothing beats a chinook off the pier the power, fight and the screaming drags.
I be heading out soon........ :)

You've got it backwards Blair, it's not too early to be fishing for salmon, it's too early to be posting pics of your catch ;)

There will be plenty of time for crowded salmon fishing in August.
