Multi species baits / setups

Has anyone tried to use bigger baits such as believers or musky spinners for pier fishing salmon? I've got a nice musky setup 8'6 xheavy fast rod, lined with 50lb braid on a decent bait caster. Was wondering if it would be worth my time to head to my local pier (bowmanville) and throw a 5 inch perch rapala or a booby trap. I've caught walleye, bass, and rockers on musky lures and only think that salmon would be the same. I've read people have had luck with j13s and 3/4 oz spoons, these are too light for a xheavy setup to cast a significant distance therefore not hitting the strike zone of staging salmon? I'd appreciate some advice .

There is a bit of a "Myth" as to how far you have to CAST out to get the Salmon on the Piers.
Let me explain:
They certainly do like the DEEPER WATER when holding early in the season.
You definately can "Cover more water" if you can cast further...
However, When the FISH are moving in their schools around the River Mouth and into the Open bays ... Doesnt really matter if you are 100 yds out or 20 ft!
I have caught Salmon at the piers right out in front (As long as it's fairly quite) and hit them far out.
When they start to "Circulate" there really isnt that much of a better Spot.
Some areas do have "Trenches" and significant structure that DOES make a difference ... however that is not the norm.
The funniest thing is WATCHING guys run from one spot to the next when they see someone hit a salmon.
It's like that area was MAGIC!
Makes me Laugh Right out LOUD! ........... "bunch of Sheep, chasing after their broken dreams"...

ps: Almost any LURE with lots of MOVEMENT will attract a Salmon. At night the "Details" are not as important. It's the ACTION that attracts and provokes the Strike!
*If you have some GLOW PAINT or GLOW TAPE ... just put some on these lures and it should improve them for night fishing. During light, it doesnt matter.
Luhr Jensens (Flatfish) have friggin AWESOME action.

Do any of you boys try drifting skein or bags this time of year? I know it works great in GB and huron, why wouldn't it work in Ontario?
Some people do it, it works.

lol...
My "problem" is that i dont have any right now!
either: Skein or loose Roe.
GREAT TIP to GET ROE
*Going to go down within the next few weeks to some of the CHARTER STATIONS either: Credit, Bronte
and get some from them. Best time is around 9am or 5pm. As long as your Polite, show your fishing licence .... they have no problems with giving you as much as you need.
That's how I mainly get some "Brown Roe" (I wont harvest it myself ... 100% release on those beauties)
I even picked up about 10 little "Coffee Jars" up at an old garage when camping this weekend. Their perfect for storing my Roe in the Freezer. Just take out one jar and thats good for about a month.

You can cast an entire mile, but if the lure is crap they won't bite it . I've heard of browns being taken on black bucktails, but I've never tried it myself. Here's a video of a salmon caught on a bucktail
Of course a spinner works. Everything eats a spinner! Heard a tip that there was an early run of salmon, had to head to the darn to see for myself. I didnt believe my eyes, 3 white bellys. Is there a cleaning station on an eastern trib?
This year I plan to drop shot a blue fox 1 in fast current where my honey hole is. I find when salmon are into the spawn some get defensive and will hit anything that resembles a threat to their spawn, a swirling clattering shiny motel should do the trick once I find the right setup for the honey hole. All this rain .............
