I just started fishing with my son this summer and he eats fish but I don't. He asked me if the fish that he catches in the waters around Toronto edible. I am really not sure, I would think not, but some people say it is okay. I would not eat anything from Grenadier Pond, but what about Humber River, Rough River, Tommy Thompson Park and Credit River.

Fish in these rivers generally come from lake Ontario. MNR has an interactive guide to eating fish that will give you the number of meals it is safe to eat in a month for various species at various sizes in various locales. Lake Ontario fish are pretty contaminated so it's a judgement call. I'd personally eat a brown trout out of there, but not a Salmon or Rainbow. Bigger they are the worse they are for you.

Children and pregnant women are more susceptible. If your son is still a child the answer is probably no don't let him eat fish from those waters.

There you go. Judgement call. My judgement is based on limited experience, safety first so I'd go with a big no to eating those fish.

I personally would never just because you can seem the grime a float on the water at night! Like everyone says, personal call but safety wise I think its just better to take even an hour or two out of your day to drive up somewhere so where you catch them, you can eat them... if you don't wanna release of course

Thanks everyone for all the replies, it helps a lot, I personally don't eat fish, but my son likes fish. I told him that we will find somewhere up north to catch something while we are camping so that he can try it. Now I have to find out where we can fish for edible fish for him and fun for us. Oh the fun of finding somewhere again.
