Tandem Rigging...

Instead of attaching a drop shot weight to the tag end of my rig, what if i tied on a shakyhead or standard jighead and improve my chances with 2 offerings on the same line?
Then i started thinking, why dont i try this in many situations?
Ive seen "Fly Guys" tying an emerger behind a nymph, so why not try something like that under a float for steelies? Roebag------single egg.......
Is there anything illegal about using multiple lures on the same line? (is that multi-swimbait umbrella rig legit?) <-----cant think of the "rig" name...

But float fishing I have tied a fly such as a nymph in tandem with a roe imitation quite a few times. Never caught anything with that rig yet though.
Save that for the steelies though, just a fly, worm, roe will work when we hit some salmon in the next few weeks.

The Carolina rig is very similar to the Texas rig. Attached is a photo of a Texas rig. The rig Float_On is talking about is the Alabama Rig or Umbrella Rig, the second photo attached is a photo of an Alabama Rig.
Yep, alabama...so can you not use that in canada/ontario with more than 4 individual lures?
On another note, i am going to claim this rig as my own now (unless its patented or some crap), or unless its a commonly used tactic.
Im calling it the "Ontario Rig" simply because we need to try to keep up appearances in the bass fishing world with the likes of Florida, Texas, Alabama, Carolina...
Seriously though, has anyone ever tried it with any success?

Ministry warns against illegal 'umbrella' fishing lure
MNR issues warning after popularity of new rig grows
CBC News

An umbrella-type fishing lure can only have four hooks. More hooks than that and the lure becomes illegal in Ontario lakes. (Ministry of Natural Resources) Starting Saturday, Canadian citizens without a fishing licence can plop their lines in Ontario lakes during Family Fishing Week. They have to obey other fishing regulations, however.
The Ministry of Natural resources is concerned about the growing popularity of the Umbrella or Alabama rig, which imitates a school of baitfish by using five lures.
According to the ministry, it is illegal to fish with a line that has more than four hooks attached in Ontario. As a result, the Alabama version of the Umbrella rig with five hooks or lures attached is not permitted for use. However, if modified to four strands or arms to accommodate only four hooks, it is allowed.
The manager of D and R Sporting Goods in Thunder Bay, Adrian Hagar, said he sells the rig, but warns customers about the law.
“So on the five-bait rigs, guys are substituting a hook with a flasher spoon or bait without a hook,” Hagar said.
Hagar added this is the first year his store has sold Alabama rigs and he said they are already a hot-ticket item.
The MNR says the rig has garnered considerable attention since a U.S. professional bass angler used it to win a large bass tournament in Alabama last October. The subsequent publicity has made it one of the most sought-after pieces of tackle in the bass-fishing community both in Ontario and in the United States.

Wow! I must admit, I laughed when I first saw the rig as it looks absolutely ridiculous... But upon seeing it in action, I must say, that really does look like a school of bait fish!
Has anyone here tried this?
I would have been tempted to try this for some pier fishing a month ago had I known about it.

I saw that Alabama rig for the first time on TV this morn. Bob Izumi was fishing bass with some dude in Florida and they rigged up the Alabama with a bunch of Berkley minnows. Looks just like a school of fish and the bass were all over it.
I saw it too, that was Gary Burghoff's son, Miles I think. He's a tournament angler who won with the rig. The thing I don't like about the rig is that Bob had a fish that was hooked in the mouth and one in the body near the tail. If everyone uses it and bags their limit, this rig will wipe out native populations of bass, walleye, what ever species it's used on.

If I was a fish, I would target the lone single fish, not the huge school of fish. What is that they say, "Safety in Numbers"...

It won't wipe out anything.
People who would use this rig are not the type of people that keep bass. And I could only see it working on spring walleye in shallow water.
Not a lot of people keep bass especially largemouth.
And, you still need to fish it properly, and locate fish
It's not a magic super secret cheating lure.

The motivation for this umbrella contraption is to offer something new on hard-fished US lakes to win tourny dollars. Fantastic! Again the fishery/fish take a backseat in the chase for the buck. Imagine a lake littered with that junk in all the deadwood after a few seasons. Imagine fighting three bass on that crap?
Most of the television fishing shows that helped hatch this bad idea are complete garbage. It's metal music mixed with ripping in the bass as fast as you can to the boat. Half the shows are tournament-focused and I would love to know what the mortality rate is of those bass kept in weigh-in bags for who-knows-how-long. This Umbrella Rig was spawned from this mess. Now thanks to some yahoos tossing it on American fishing shows, many here will think they can legally throw the mess in Ontario. Still stunned by the numbers of anglers who don't read the regs here.
Leave the Umbrella Rig where it belongs, in the junk pile of bad tackle ideas.
lol ok I'm done I've got Drum to jig for tonight damnit!

I don't see the attraction (from the angler point of view, not the fish's) of lobbing that hunk of crap, I mean come on, the old school pickeral rig was nutty enough. Love to just focus on my hand, to the rod handle, down the rod, down the line to a single hook/lure in a straight direct path. Seriously, it's becoming a meat factory out there. If we can't catch the way we have been doing, what's next?

Unless someone has your number... or Your number is up...
I'm sure there's a few more of those sayings.

Something tells me once you snag one of those things you'll probably think twice about buying another one. They're 30 bucks plus the cost of whatever shads or other soft bait you put on it. I think these will be a relatively short fad if only due to the cost.
That is unless you're one of these guys or dream to be one, then well...

Plus you can't really throw it on spinning gear...
You'll need some MH or H rod (7-1/2') with a ballsy baitcast reel spooled with 40-60 braid or 20lb flouro.
Try throwing that with light gear and it'll be $40 you'll never see again...

Just wanted to comment on all the talk about the umbrella rig - i actually have two of these, one with 5 wires and an ultra light one that only has three. While many consider it to be a fad that's designed to catch more anglers than fish, I can't argue the success I've had with it. I've been out in a group of four, fishing from two canoes, and this rigs but consistent fish in the boat on real slow days. It doesn't just target the lunkers either, i caught smallmouth under 2lbs and even a white bass with this rig.
I also rig it legally- i use three swimbaits and two willow blades for a little flash and it does just great.
Just my 2 cents
