Hello,

Just want to say Hi and let you know that I have been enjoyed reading on this forum !

Thank you to all the MOD's and all contributors, it was very informative forum.

I don't see anything related to this threat in the Forum so here it goes ...

One questions, When to " set Hook ?"

I feel that I have lost too many fishes knowing that they were bitting but the second that
I'am setting hook,,voila, no fish hooked...

I spended more than 8 hours in Rice lake while my buddies got at least 1 or more Fishes
and I got nothing for the day !
(Disappointing, I know, but I am not giving fishing for that? Don't you?)

For SunFish/Blue grill,, normally tac, tac tac,, then sethook ok...

For Bass, it goes tap tap,,0,5 second to 1 second set hook ? I got no fish for this..

For Salmon,, it know it went POP,POP hook set ?(I would normmally lost a Half,, 0.5 seconds before hookset, hence no fish?)

For more then fews occasion,, I felt the fish was holding onto my bait and by the time I set hook... no fish !

Please help?
Thank you very much,

SetHook (Hence my ID)

I don't do a huge hook set like some of the pros... I normally just pull the rod six inches or so up and that is my hook set. I set the hook as soon as I get a bite and if I do not feel the weight of the fish after my little hook set, I send the bait 6 inches back down to the fish.

Hey Set

I think you are waiting too long before setting the hook. Once you feel something nibbling SET THE HOOK, and bang, fish on. Don't wait too long and don't set the hook like your in a tug of war. Just jerk the rod tip up, if the fish is on then give the rod another up wards jerk and start reeling in. If you don't feel anything, relax and let the line back down by lowering your rod tip. Sometimes the fish is watching your lure take off to the surface and waiting for it to come back down. When it does the fish may then decide to take it and you set the hook just as you feel it nibbling. It's all a reaction thing, you feel them biting you set the hook just as they are biting not after they have taken your worm away. Sometimes the fish will take only the tail end of your worm but usually bass will take the whole thing.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hook size may be playing a role here.... the appropriate hook size for the type of fish you are chasing is very important, and also take into consideration the type of bait you are using when selecting the right hook. Grubman had a great tutorial on hook styles in another thread that is worth checking out.

.... but yes, timing is everything when it comes to setting the hook. Maybe you are feeling small fish nibbling your bait/stealing your bait at times. This can often be mistaken for actual "bites" from the panfish or gamefish you are seeking.

Hang in there!
