Hey everyone,

I managed to get out to my favourite little lake over the weekend and attempt to catch some more Rainbows. It seems I may have discovered an itch upon catching my first one last weekend! I fought the weather on Friday, and went out with no luck in terms of trout, but picked up this little guy on a copper john nymph:



The weather was much improved on Saturday, so my buddy and I hit up the lake again. I couldn't resist taking a photo for you all



We were out there from around 2pm - 6pm with mostly bass action - a few nice ones we picked up (I was using a brown wooley bugger, and my friend was spin-casting with a spinner-bait):





At about 5:15pm we decided to start rowing back in, but stopped for a few last casts, and I guess we hit the holy grail I hooked up on 2 rainbows and landed them both. What a fight! A few VERY nice runs, and the second fish had a beautiful dance across the top of the water. I LOVE THESE FISH!!!! All of them were successfully released due to barbless hooks and minimal time out of the water!

I was at the local fair today and purchased some flies from a local vendor who hand-crafts all of his lures (spin-casting, as well as flies). He was ever so kind to hint at the "possibility" of some trout being in a stream VERY close to my house. Alas, I'm google-mapping right now and will be grabbing the fly-rod to head off and see what I can find!

Thanks, CC! I may have to try my hand at Brown trout today as apparently that's what some folks have caught in the stream where I've been directed

We'll see I guess - what a beautiful day for an adventure anyhow!

That second pic is just awesome, it could be a post card with the caption "This could/should be you right now". Nice catches, that bow is beautiful. Bass on a fly is what I hope to get soon. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks everyone! As for the browns, nothing today - I think the area requires more legwork than I really had time for today. Either way, it was still gorgeous just being outside!

Hey guys... never fished a small lake for trout. .. how do I go about finding one. . .rocky bottom..maybe coldstream fed?? Any around T.O.. ... not lookin for any secret spots so dont get your panties in a bunch Thanx LOL

I'm not sure of any locations in the GTA as I'm about 3 hours east - however, I can give you some pointers that helped me out a lot. Cold-stream or sping-fed is definitely a plus. The rainbow in the lake I was fishing were DEEP (cooler water, therefore more oxygenated). I had to get my line down around 30-40 ft to start getting hits. Another key is to look for any surface activity. Once I see trout feeding on the surface, I have an idea of where they are feeding. I watched a lot of programs (TV, and YouTube) and did a lot of reading of stuff done by Brian Chan - that guy is a guru for still-water trout fishing out west. Another great tip that a forum member passed a long to me was to not over complicate things. At the end of the day, rainbows are just fish

Hey thanks for the tip! Next year i'm going to do alot of small stream fishing for trouts. Prob gunna start in fergus/alora. . . forks of the credit then . .. . .well, sure someone will tag along for atrip and find somewhere. Heck i love to fish, and a day of specks sounds like fun to me too. Any avid fly fisherman out there who likes to fish a hard to get to streams like on the vids of "bingo bango"??!! LOLOL

Thanks AKnook - only wish I could experience some of the salmon I've seen in your posts! The pic you posted here is pretty sweet as well. I would eventually like to start taking some higher quality photos of these fish, but am a little nervous to take my DSLR into the boat Don't mind packing it along side a river or creek, but I'd get a bit nervous with it when in a lake

The bass absolutely smashed the copper john - actually thought he was a trout at first because of the amount of fight the little guy put up. Either way, I plan to be back at it again this weekend, with hopefully some more pics to follow!

I have dunked my fair share of electronics. I have gone through 4 phones, a video camera and a camera. The camera for some reason after leaving it alone for about 2 months started working again. lol. This winter I am getting a waterproof/element proof camera. I really want to take some great under water shots of some of my fish.

The copper john is my go to fly for one of the small creeks I fish. The rainbows go nuts for it. I didn't pick up fly fishing until leaving Ontario, would be cool to catch a bass on the fly. Again, congrats on your catch. I look forward to seeing more pics. Fish on!

What a great shot, looks like you hooked him square in the middle of the mouth

Yea it was dead on the middle on his nose. I stood on a large rock looking down at this deep pool. There were a few boulders in the middle of the pool that could be hiding fish from my view. I drifted the fly through the boulders and sure enough I saw the fish strike the fly. I immediatly set the hook. I can never get enough of seeing fish strike. So exciting. I caught a couple fish from that pool but this one's colors really stood out.

I catch rainbows all summer long in lakes and have never had to go beyond 15ft down. The water I fish is clear and deep and what I find is they like to come up from below and grab the bait.
