Yes, it's very good to take kids fishing! Just as good to get them involved in the process as well.
I shore fish alot with my kids, just cause our family is too big to get out in the boat all at once, lol. So we shore fish at least 3 times per week or maybe more, even if it's just for a few hours. My kids love it! They love being out in nature. And their always learning about fishing, or nature in general, which is obviously a very positive thing.
We ice fish alot in the winter months too. We have one really good area fairly close to shore, and each year, about this time, I go to the shoreline and trim all the grass down and pack a trail. When it snows, they have an awesome sliding hill, like 75 yards from our main ice fishing spot. So in the winter we fish, have a fire, bring some food, and my kids and the locals can spend half the day fishing and the rest of the time sledding. It's awesome!
But when we're homebound, my kids also love tying their own walleye rigs and harnesses. Again, I think is a very positive thing. Teaching them knots, patience etc. They also paint some of their own blades, allowing them to express their artistic sides as well.
All in all it's just a very fulfilling way of life, out in the bush, in NW Ontario
