Yeah so smaller baits will sink more easily. Again it all depends on if you're doing a straight retrieve in shallower water or if you're chucking them out and drifting in a deep current. In either case you want to be close to bottom without snagging. I usually have jig heads from 1/4 to 3/4 on me and you can adapt to most conditions.

In that pic, are you chucking and jigging or are you fishing it under a float?

No float. Just chucking and jigging. I think it's more effective than float fishing this time of year.

Tried trolling Lake O today from the kayak. Got myself breakfast. Not bad considering it was my first time out. Sorry for the awful picture.

Looks like a cross between a tuna, brown and Atlantic.

What were you trolling?
Lots of alewives close to shore, should be great for trolling.

Just a spoon. Hopefully I can get into something bigger this summer. I've always wanted to catch a fresh summer salmon from the kayak.

Congrats! Did you have a whole downrigger or copper/leadcore? Or were you just flatlining? I meant to get down to Grimsby this spring for browns and spring kings but it never worked out.

Hey Will, I was using a torpedo diver actually. Right now I have the "Shark" which can get you down anywhere between 20-50ft depending on the amount of line out. I will eventually get a larger one if I decide to troll any deeper. I also bought a #1 tadpole diver for trolling spring brown and kings - that will get you down to about 20-30ft. Again depending on speed and line out. The torpedo divers are very simple and can get you down very far without almost any resistance.
I also wanted to get out in the spring time but we all know what kind of weather we were working with in May.

Thanks @pop-vlado. Good info. I've got a jet diver, but I haven't tried it out yet. Apparently they drag like mad. Torpedo divers look pretty cool though. Good luck and keep the photos coming!

If you try the jet divers, let me know how they work. I gave up on trying them due to the drag issue. Otherwise they have the advantage of being buoyant. Meaning that if you have a paddle kayak and you are trolling two lines and stop to fight a fish, your other line floats up rather than being stuck on the bottom.
