I do not mind the look on the bank

so long as they get back in unharmed

It adds an extra element to the picture sometimes

10 seconds out of the water is a lot less harmful than smashing hooks into the side of the fishes mouth.....nice fish!

Mr. Evans, its a learning experience, as a professional yourself, you know the effects of a fish out of water for too long.  10 seconds may not affect the fish but proper handling and education are needed.  As for the hook in the mouths, a predatory fishes mouth is designed to take little pain, less nerve ending are found in the mouth of a fish... no doubt our hooks inflict pain from time to time... its not always the case... regardless, fishing is more or less a hypocrisy

I didn't get a picture of it but the first fish had a clipped right front fin and from what I read it's from the U.S somewhere.

I think most anglers obviously know the damage that can occur from a fish being out of water for too long. As long as people minimize the length of time they are out of water in most cases it won't do much harm to the fish. Sure the fish laying on a bank isn't the best thing for it, that I can't argue. In most cases anglers on the river don't carry net so you only have two options, bank the fish or release it on the water. If the fish stays in the water it has the chance to go for another run or two exhausting the fish even more which can cause a build up of lactic acid in the fish which can be deadly especially in warm water periods. If the fish is on the bank it has the chance of removing the protective slim from the fish which later on could create an infection. Either way it's up to the angler to make their own decision.

Maybe we should start a new thread regarding the proper handling of fish, I'm sure there is already a few but it couldn't hurt to do another. As for fisherman being hypocrits.....count me in!!

I think that many steelhead anglers could learn a thing or two from muskie and carp fisherman.

A live realease net would be a good investment for many of us, (I know I want to pick on up soon).

I know personally I am trying to improve my C&R techniques.

Check out Italo's newest steelhead video, haha I like the part where he is jabbing at a fish laying on its side after being out of the water for a good while saying "perfect release"

it doesnt require alot of research--hold your breath-this is a perfect simulator of  the fishes experience...take away any common sense we have to regulate our asphyxia (cancel that common sense thing fish have more of it) and the fact that we can fight back in most cases..well you get the picture-or get your buddy to choke you even better simulator-keep em in the water. or eatem.. or be like me and dont catch them at all. yPS every post will now end with chase come fishing.
