lakers aren't really known for their fight compared to steelies & browns, but this one gave me a run for my money.  it hit hard and I thought I had a steelhead @ first, because of all the splashing, runs and headshakes.  a pair of hikers stopped to watch me fight it.

incredible cath notta...i gotta head to that river and try for some sturgeon in the summer, ive heard stories lol

 

There is no open season on the notty for sturgeon.

 

Targetting them would be illegal...

If you would of read his post, he was drifting for steel, the pools they fish are loaded with dropbacks and sturgeon, for all the years they've drifted that area, he's never hooked a sturgeon, this was a first and maybe last. I'm sure fighting it and getting the hook out of it's mouth would be better then leaving it by breaking it off, seeing as they have relatively small mouths, and a sharp barbed obstacle would be a hindrance for it to be eating properly.
I'm sure my buddy notta is not the kind of guy to intentionally target any out of season or prohibited fish.
