Rather than let my outboard freeze this winter, I picked up a used engine stand, made a backer board and picked up some 1/2" carriage bolts.

Hey Nate

Check out "How to keep outboard carb clean after use" thread. I thought it was about winter storage/prep. Any questions let me know. Nice motor you got there.

Hey dude. Nice setup with the motor. I used to just lay mine down in the garage. With my motor I get it winterized at my local boat store. They clean all the hoses and make sure nothing freezes in them. Just a tip

I picked the engine up this summer, but I am not exactly sure how well it was cared for nor what service was done on it. The closest reputable boat store is about an hour away which is a pain, and I am fairly mechanically inclined so my basement is a better choice for me right now.
The engine stand was 40 dollars used from kijiji, plus it was just around the corner from me so that was a good score.
I have read the winterization articles on various sites and will be following them shortly when i have more time. I just need to locate a local Mercury dealer that has the gear oil pump and fitting for the lower unit.

My advice to you is have a professional look at it. Even if you have to throw it in your car. I bought a used motor one time and go screwed and I was in the middle of the lake. Get it winterized so they can have a look at it.

> I also have a 20 hp (Honda -2006) that i winterized myself for the first time this week. I have had it a couple of years. Changed the engine oil and the lower gear oil, ran it dry and drained the carb as best i could by loosening the screw and letting any remaining gas come out the small hose. The one thing i didnt do is remove the plugs and spray any fogging oil into the cylinders. Do you do that every year? It doesnt get too much use.

I service my 20 hp every year and it still runs great. If you need some help, let me know.

It's better in the basement than outdoor storage, but the fuel in the carb can mess thing up. Also if you have a leak in your lower unit, the water will be sitting in there for months, rusting away the gears.
