Afternoon folks, curious as to what every one uses for their bottom bounce setup when fishing a mighty zone 20 section in deep (20' or so) raging fast water. I have hooked on to several fish on my 10'6" noodle rod in the slower pools at the river bank, but either lost the hookset (tip too slow for strong initial hook set maybe), or lost the fish in the current. As exciting as it is to have a fat trout on the end of the line, obviously a guy needs to seal the deal and land her. So I brought in my 9' mooching rod with a bit more back bone and speed (medium power, medium action) to try for a deeper hookset and fighting power, but I can't seem to get the hookset with a rod that stiff.

So it is a question of what gear are you bouncing with? Do I need a new toy, or do I need to take a new approach at my tactics? ;)

You can barb me with a snide comment like that, or you can actually offer some advice. Perhaps a little more than 'try using the proper gear' because CLEARLY I do not know what the PROPER GEAR is... so enlighten me, genius. Thanks for coming out.

At Port Dalhousie I have had success using my 10'6'' rod which is a 5/6 wgt fly rod tied as a spinning rod. My 9'6" HMX Fenwick rod has more backbone and works just as well and will land fish quicker so release is easier on the fish. On the Niagara river I think the 9'6" Fenwick would work for bottom bouncing ,but I have never tried it there. My guess would be that your not using sharp hooks and that is why you are missing fish . Try using Diiachi 1150 hooks or Raven Specialist hooks. When bottom bouncing you have to inspect your hook after every hang up to ensure the hook hasn't lost it's point.

You might want to try braided line too, zero stretch helps when you have a lot of line out but still need to set that hook quick.

X2. Just like Thumpers mother said. If you don't have anything nice to say. Don't say anything at all

i think a rod with fast action is best, need the quick hard hookset. dont need a super long rod, some of the boat guys only use 7 ft rods.

lol im starting to think that you dont know the answer to his question....

I would think that the 10'6 rod would be find for bottom bouncing however 20' deep flows may require something longer/stronger. Im no bottom bouncer but maybe an 11'6 or 12'6 fast action would be the way to go.

Also did you haver slack line when you went to set the hook? If so that can be problematic as with bottom bouncing or any type of fishing you want to make sure there is no slack line.

Hey trout,
Most of the people here have no problem lending a hand to fellow members. How can one learn without being educated? And that's what a lot of us noobs or veterans go on here to do, share and learn. There will always be disagreement amongst people, but hopefully, one can still learn from their disagreements. I mean no disrespect to you, just pointing out that what you are posting are neither helpful or educational.
Even stupidity has it's own rewards.

Once the fish hit the current, I may as well have hooked onto a Volkswagen. There was no way I had the rod power to fight it out.

On the 10'6" noodle, it was a 4lb Maxima fluoro at the hook, 6lb Suffix (original) mono main line. One the 9' mooching rod, tried both 6lb and 8lb fluoro leaders and 10lb Trilene Big Game mono mainline. Probably worth mentioning the leaders ranged 4' - 6' on both rods.

He mentioned in a previous post his decades of experience catching migratory fish. I just cannot understand why he is being tight lipped with the advice other than he must own a tackle shop and wants me to drop by. ;)

I digress! To answer your question, I try to keep up the slack as much as possible so the line is virtually straight from the tip to the surface as the line bounces along with the current.
