im in for either day.January 20th was going to be the date, but with 10-20mm of rain in the forecast for tomorrow and spring like weather, I really want to wait for some colder temperatures and better ice conditions.
Looks like it's supposed to cool down by end of next week - if we get persistent cold weather for a week or two and some ultra cold ice-building temps - we can go ahead.
Sunday, February 3rd, would be the next possible date depending on how the weather goes.

February 3rd is the day, pending ice conditions. Forecast for late next week is looking ok for ice building.

any idea on the lake yet?
Haven't picked yet, I was looking at small lake trout lakes in the Bancroft area though. The smaller the better. I talked with some locals in the summer, but understandably they are fairly tight-lipped about their hot spots.
I am open to any suggestions, please keep those via PM.

We need to pick a lake now...
Maybe best not to post the name in the open where lurkers can see. Too bad we couldn't get some sort of a private thread where only people attending can read?

You seem to be quite tuned in ti which lakes are frozen and which are good to fish. Maybe you could recommend somewhere in Hali. that would be a good bet for ice(and fish) for Feb 3 w/o giving away too many secrets.

this is salmos GTG i dont wanna steal any "spotlight" lol and the lakes i have done my homework on are 1sq/km if that, way to small for a GTG but perfect for just a couple buddies! do we have any idea of how many people are coming? why dont we just do lake joe or ross? closer than hali/ bancroft, the ice is going to be more than safe, and those lakes are big enough to support 100 anglers at a time if not more, just my .02 lol and that way some of us multi species anglers can bugger off and play with pike if the trout dont wanna play, something that you cant do on the smaller backlakes that are usually 100% trout.

FIrst off Lakers don't open on Lake Joe until the 15th of Feb.
Secondly I highly doubt the ice will be "safe" on either of those lakes by then. They are both still 95% open water. We need nights of -20 or better for them to freeze in that time frame...

1. Has lake trout
2. Is small (better ice, not everyone will have a fish finder, higher concentration of fish, less walking around)
3. Somewhere in Haliburton or Muskoka region, or not far from there
A large parking lot is not necessary, I'm betting most people will be in on the carpool for the sake of saving $ on gas. So there shouldn't be a whackload of vehicles coming. A bit of a hike into the lake is ok, but nothing excessively long. Ideally we can park right beside or close to the lake.
Bonus if it has other game fish (whitefish, pike, walleye), and bonus if there are other lakes nearby for a contingency plan, but not necessary. Also would be nice to have a bathymetry map, or for someone in our group to have experience with the lake, but again not essential.
So redneckchromer, if you have the scoop on some tiny lake trout lakes, all the better that they're small! The reality is that not everyone that wants to go will be able to make it, so overcrowding should not be a problem.

Following are the criteria I have been considering while searching for a suitable lake:
1. Has lake trout
2. Is small (better ice, not everyone will have a fish finder, higher concentration of fish, less walking around)
3. Somewhere in Haliburton or Muskoka region, or not far from there

the lakes ive been reading on are bow and splake lakes but ill look into the lakers. splake would be easier for us to target they hang out shallower and they are stocked more heavily than lakers for sure, one lake will get a couple 100 lakers where the splake lakes get minimum 1000. ill look into the lakers tho

Redneckchromer and CanadianAngler, hope you guys are getting into some fish today. The weather is beautiful, gotta love the extra daylight we've gained since the solstice. Let us know how the ice was.
Good news is that a below seasonal cold snap is coming, bad news is that it's coming right after a significant snowfall. At least that's the forecast for now.
