I think I will be in the newmarket area this coming weekend. If they laker grounds on simcoe are no good I might be venturing north.

I have already been out for jumbos 6 or 8 times this year, other than the pike that come around I'm getting I bit bored of them.

Been busy lately, sorry for not updating sooner.

Given the double digit temps and heavy rain in the forecast, it is difficult to imagine the ice being safe enough for a gathering this weekend, especially for people who have never ice fished before.

Next possibility would be February 10th. February 17th is in the middle of reading week and it's also family day, so that's a no go. Since the trip is being planned for fairly far north, hopefully we'll get excellent ice conditions for the 10th. Otherwise, we'll try for Feb 24th.

one day of + temps isnt going to ruin over a foot of ice dude lol its -8 in haliburton right now no ice has even STARTED to melt up there its going up to +10 tomorrow but then back to -10 overnight anything that melts will heal up when the rain freezes up ontop on the ice anyway...

I'll second that.

Fri and Sat should be quite cold( -16 per Env Can) esp at nite. Existing ice will harden right back up and any water/slush on top will be frozen.

Same, What's up for discussion is how the ice on Kbay will hold up. The perch grounds should be just fine on Simcoe this weekend but will be a gong show.

I was out on the ice on Simcoe about 4 days after the big thaw and it was just fine if not a bit better.

If there is more than 8 or 10 inches this weather should not affect it much at all.

If anyone is apprehensive about ice conditions give an operator or tackle shop in the area a call.

I was north of Bancroft about a week ago, and spoke with a couple guys who said they were out on 6 inches of black ice. I had my gear with me, but didn't even have the time to drill any holes and check for myself.

Just spoke with some operators, who said there is currently a foot of ice, and there may be 14-15" by Sunday.

February 3rd is BACK ON.

Location will be decided Wednesday. It will not be posted, everyone interested will be notified by PM. We can then arrange car pooling. I have one 8" auger which I will be bringing. I don't care how many holes we drill with it, that's what I bought it for. It's going to be cold, I only have a one man hut unfortunately. (How many layers are recommended / what to bring will be discussed before Sunday so those without any experience will have a better idea. Obviously you will have to dress very warmly.)

Redneckchromer graciously offered to partake in the research. Anyone else wanting to recommend lakes, please do. We can make the final decision Wednesday evening.

Looking forward to Sunday!

I am going over stocking lists of several MNR districts. Looking for laker/whitefish lakes, with small surface areas and shallow depths. Then going to purchase a bathymetry map of the lake I choose. It will include access points and other salient details.

I didn't see redneck's post when I updated this thread earlier this morning.

I did not discuss changing dates or species with him. The outing he is planning in that thread is separate from this one.

I couldn't give less of a sh*t about football, and the outing in this thread is for Sunday, February 3rd.
