Canadian Tire is selling 2 Berkley ice rods and reels for $23.99 including 2 packs of ice line. Regular is $39.99 for this package, so it's 40% off.

Anyone want to split on this with me?

Will be approximately $13 each for a rod, reel and a package of line. The line by itself is around $5, so it's like getting a new ice fishing rod and reel for $8.

The reel is rated for around 4lb/120 yards, so it has enough line capacity for fishing deep water.

I only need 1 rod/reel/pack of line, but will definitely buy this if I find someone who wants the other rod/reel/pack of line.

Post or PM me.

Same reel I think one of the rods is a bit shorter, frankly I don't care if I take the longer or the shorter one, the reels are identical.

Hey guys. I bought the same last year. They are a great deal. Just a tip, when you get it make sure u lube the reels. Makes it smoother. Oh an yeah one is ultra soft an one a bit stiffer. But I'm second guessing if I would use for lakers.

I was thinking of Ice Fishing for the first time this winter until I saw that Video on Youtube of them all falling through the ice & the comedy of errors that followed.... not many things scare me but the shock of hitting freezing water and my bollox hitting me in the throat does.

I'd rather face a madman with a gun or tap dance in a mine field

got them 4 years ago for $20. surprisingly the rods are decent, small is good for panfish, the bigger rod is kind of useless; too stiff for panfish but too soft for lakers, maybe it's made for some small waleye or whitefish.
the reels are junk. if i find them you can have them.
i'd rather buy separate rod and reel. although there are some good combos in $50 range

Thanks for the feedback guys, I agree that lube goes a long way on reel performance, my spinning reels receive a huge dosage of WD40.

I don't mind using stiffer rods for panfish, I always use my medium heavy for panfish in the summer without any issues. But if they're both too soft for lakers, I may not buy them in that case. I would like a rod that can handle lakers.

I've been ice fishing with my 7' rod lately, I guess I will keep doing so until I can find a suitable ice fishing rod.

ST,

Have any old rod tips lying around? Get a piece of wood dowel, drill a hole, stick the rod tip or a piece of it in, duct tape reel to dowel. ( Did you say you had an uncle Bob?Posted Image)

I'll try posting a pic later, but basically I make a rod handle out of a dowel by drilling a hole axially in it.

cut off 2' of the tip (of a broken rod) and then cut the rod right above the cork handle. Then drill a hold through the cork big enough to fit the 2' of tip section through. You can even cut the oork handle off right above the hook keeper or strip off the hook keeper and re-tie it to the new rod. A rod made this way from a quality broken rod would likely be better than the CTire deal. The rods I have aren't any better though, I'll probably make a trip to the store right after the first laker I hook through the ice.

i have made a few rods as i could never find a heavy enough rod, other than a broomstick one. Have since moved on to st croix rods. great value with graphite blanks for 30 bucks (15 at radioworld i believe) . graphite makes a huge difference compared to 'glass for detecting panfish and walleye bites. lakers not so much cuz you know it when they crunch it

I have a Medium Action (but it's more like Medium Heavy) 7' Pflueger President that had the tip broken off, and I haven't really been using it much lately. It's a 1 piece and I prefer 2 piece rods for ease of transportation.

Is joining the top section with the handle easy? What would I need, where would I get it and much would it cost? If I just need fiberglass or epoxy, heck even Dollarama carries the stuff.

Dowel is pretty cheap. I don't think I glued mine at all----just jammed in a couple of 'wedges'(pointed sticks a bit bigger than toot picks). If I wanted to glue I'd probably just use Weldbond, fairly cheap at CTC and easy to use.

I haven't tried or even looked at it yet, but my plan is to merge 2 or so feet of the tip with the handle of the rod. Might as well since I already have a perfectly good handle on that rod.

This is more or less how I plan to turn my 7' rod into an ice fishing rod

most likely it will snap on a big fish in the spot where it was jointed. its almost the same as pulling in fish with one hand on the handle and one on the middle of the rod; i broke my fly rod like that.
having said that it might hold up for ice fishing, but now you loose on sensitivity and weight.
even $10 ice rod would be better. you don't need a long rod for ice fishing. you don't want to sit 5 feet away from hole and fishfinder, and how are you going to land a fish holding a rod above your head. just something to think about for those who never been ice fishing
