Does anybody have any experience fishing under UV/black light? Some say when used with florescent line and floats, it is a great way to see what you are doing without flooding the area with white light and spooking fish. Others say even UV light can spook fish. Also heard the same argument for green light... Thoughts?

just an FYI, fishing with a light to attract fish is illegal.

taken from the regs, it is illegal to:

Use artificial lights to attract fish except:
– to fish for smelt, or to fish for lake whitefish or lake herring with
a dip net
– if the light is part of a lure attached to a line used in angling.

i have only ever heard of using lights when fishing for smelts in the night.

Yes. I've actually used crankbaits in UV coated colors before. It seems to work well in murky water.

If it's just your line you want to see then it won't be illegal. You just can't point it into the water, as mentioned. But you have to use florecent line, yes it will work. One of the fishing TV shows used it once. The only problem here is UV might attract more bugs b/c that's what they see. So you will be able to see your line but you and your boat will be covered in bugs......lol. Your catch will not be what you expected.........lol.

No intentions of poaching here. :) Just looking for options to see what I am doing without giving myself away to the game.

Noob, the way I was to understand it, baitfish are attracted to light and of course the game fish are looking for the baitfish, but I understand white light spooks the game fish.

Grubman, what you say makes sense... given the last time I looked at a bug zapper, it looked like a UV light... I read somewhere that green light did not attract as many bugs, but fishing at night even without a light usually ends in me donating a pint of blood!

Rain-Bow, that is a nice chunk of chrome!

In niagara here all the water is pure mud year round. I use chartreuse jig heads and silver, green, yellow and orange crankbaits.

I don't do any night fishing except for walleye, so i just take a big work light with me and put is on the shore infront of me. What are you planning to use this light for?

I've looked into all those different colored bulbs, they are all marketing BS. Bugs see all the lights and into the UV spectrum. No color repells them. The only way a light bulb is going to keep bugs away from you is if you put the light 50 down river, The bugs will go to the light and not bother with you.......lol.

Since mosquitos love your sweet blood there's a couple of things you can do, insect repellent with DEET is probably the first one you tried. It does not work on everyone, and it makes some sick. Next is fabric softener sheets, tear one sheet in half and put 1/2 in each side pocket. The smell will keep them off for a while. The highest praised one I've heard of is Thermacell. For people like you this might be one of the best options. It's got a pad soaked in repellent and you light it, the heat activates the repellent and keeps the skeeters away. I've heard from others like you that this is the only thing that works.

CT used to sell lights that are suppose to attract fish. What it actually does is attract phyto-plankton, they draw in the baitfish, which then bring in the gamefish. It's a unfair advantage for the angler, I guess that's why it's now illegal to use.

So here a question for thought, if it's illegal to fish with artificial lighting I'm wondering the spoons that glow would that also be condidered as producing artificial lighting?and hence also illegal?food for thought.

Your post took me back - we use to tape a hockey stick and flashlight to a net to get smelts on the Magnetawan... good old days, yup they were.

Hey Trini

I had a thread about this before. Noob had the answer from the regs for me. Artificial lighting that's part of the lure is ok. I'll let him post the details.

I believe that if the lure that has the light is attached to your line there is an exception as fishernick stated up top.

Atleast it is here. One of David Attenborough's shows had people in the Phillipeans or Indonesia still using it to "catch" their fish. Guess they never heard of C&R......lol. Put it on ebay........lol. Good thing the MNR put that in writing........lol.

I was looking thru the Bass Pro catalogue and came across the submersible light. This is 12 volts. You hook it up to a car battery on a dock, and drop the light down into the water. Game fish come to the light and you just drop your line down.

Too bad it's illegal to put a light on you minnow cage. If that was allowed you have minnows in no time.
