Apz245, do yourself a favour, when it comes to a pin rig, buy used from forum members, they generally treat the gear like its made of gold, then see if you like it! If you don't, which IMO is virtually impossible, then resell. But you will get hooked and then ?
Midnight "madness" is just the beginning.

hahah, no need for apologies.. I've been out maybe 5 times and really am starting to notice that my gear is limiting me.. I still have tons to learn when it comes to finding the fish but I just hate losing bites because of my equipment
I smell a purchase and then upgrades.....and upgrades......

I got really lucky, my father bought an okuma aventa 13'6 combo years ago and never used it once, so i think i'm gonna have to borrow it until he wants it back.. which will probably be never. or i'll end up buying it off him when I have some extra cash
Found this out after making the thread btw, im so hyped to go fishing right now lol

spend 300+ on a reel and you will be good for 10+ years. second hand reel. buy something high quality. i am not a big fan of spend too little on a CP and upgrading. if it is quality made it wll last many decades.whole point of CP is for the float to move freely and the most natural presentation. high quality reels have really good startup. low quality only decent at faster waters.

keep in mind you don't need to spend a lot to be successful, for example, my outfit costs about 300 total taxes in. okuma aventa reel, you can pick one up new for about 170, and a streamside steelhead edition rod, about 100 new, then of course your line. and if you want, you can upgrade the bearings for pretty cheap as well

i also rock the aventa hard... and love it.

that aventa should keep you happy for at least 2 years

Lots of the cheaper reels will do you just fine to start, aventa, matrix and I have even heard some good things about the rapala lately. Just keep an eye on kijiji, lots of people buy centerpins and don't use them or don't fish steelhead enough to learn.

gonna go try it out next week.. i want to spool it with some high vis line.. I keep hearing about people using backing though.. is this necessary?

As far as I know backing is only to keep the weight of the reel down and save you putting a huge amount of line on your pin that you will never use. Just put on 200 yards of dacron then the line of your choosing.

so you guys would definitely recommend the backing? most people ive seen with pins I haven't noticed them having it.. after the dacron.. how many yards of mainline? thanks

with mine i put on 180yrds of 20lb braid, and then 300yrds of 6-12lb mono depending on species

250 yrd main line is about right, leaves about 1/8th of an inch on your reel's spool which will allow good casting. unless you bought a zeppelin with super shallow spool, you need backing. i guess you can rock a cheaper reel and see how it goes, but once you fish with 400+ dollar reel and you hold a 100 dollar reel, you will be able to tell the difference right away.

im gonna go to bass pro tomorrow and grab 200 yards of dacron or braid for the backing, and then 300 yards of 10lb high vis mono, and try and leave about 1/8th inch.. hopefully this setup will work for steelhead

no. 100 yrds of dacron is more than enough. just get your fave mono. i personaly went from high vis to clear.

looked on the reel box and it says its rate for 275 yards of 8lb line with 50 yards of 20lb backing, so i'll probably just go with what they recommend, if its too little i'll add a little more mainline.
thanks for all the help guys, cant wait to get out next week and try it out
