Ok, so I've read all the replies and I've noticed that people have missed something! Don't forget the get the top water baits...Jitterbugs and poppers! I was fishing the Grand last summer and was really doing well with them. Now, I'm using a 6'6" Ugly stick and love it and my Pflueger Trion loaded with braided line rocks it for Bass and Pike (no leader). I know down at Port Credit by the bridge I can cast a fairly heavy spoon over 1/2 way across the river.

that rod is designed for braid but will work fine with any line, I think you'll like a 7 foot rod much better for shore fishing

Thanks f or that feed back, I know it sounded like a silly question but just wanted to be sure before I spend the cash on it.

 

I do think that I will go with a 7' rod.

like was already said, designed for braid, but can use other lines on it, just if you want to eventually switch to a braided line for heavy cover, you can do so without worrying about damaging the eyes on the rod

Yeah I was trying to cover several areas with my initial "shopping" spree, and as I go I will undoubtly be adding to my tackle box.

 

I asked this question earlier but had no feed back.... so I will ask again ( should I buy some kind of protection for my rod and reel ).

no, its a waste, most rods and reels come with a manufactures warranty built in, and, not trying to sound elitist, its a cheap enough setup to be replaced easily, where you'd want to buy protection is on the $200-$1000  rods

Thanks... was not sure if it was a justifiable  purchase, so I guess I will use the extra cash to pick up some spoons.

Question about leaders for you all....is it better for a new guy like me to buy pre made leaders or to make my own?
I have read a lot about making them out of fluorocarbon, but was not sure if this is to complicated for a new guy at first.

Also if I buy pre made one what length would you all suggest.

for leaders all you need to do is tie a swivel to your mainline and then tie your flurocarbon to the swivel. No need to purchase the pre-made leaders with snelled hooks or anything like that. I dont even think those leaders are flurocarbon.

I'm not sure if anybody has suggested it but I'd suggest to get a couple of spinnerbaits 1/8- 3/8 oz in various colours...they're such a great bait and work on many species and conditions

A hula popper will cove alot of your top water bases. I don't have a rod case or sleeve for mine. I agree with JMatt, it's a waste of money.

I also agree..... i can use that money on some spoons or other lures etc...etc..

Question for you all.... if any knows? How do the prices at Sail ( outdoor store ) compare to Bass Pro. Just wondering if they are comparable, i would go to Sail it is much closer to where i live. Bass Pro is about 1 1/2hrs from me.

 

Sails on line seems to be very limited in what the show for stock,  do the carry more then they show on line?

personally i find the employees at sail much easier to get along with, and yes, sail carries more than they show online, bass pro does have a larger selection, sail is bass pros main competator here, they will beat or price match basspro

Thanks guys... You say that the will meet Bass Pros Prices? How do you show them the prices if you are only going by Bass Pros online prices?

If they do ... i find that very intriguing, Even if they do not  I think I will try Sail, it is closer so even if the prices is a little greater, I have to remeber that it will cost me $40.00 in gas alone to get up to bass pro.

sail has full stock for specific brands... but nothing compared to BPS.

 

I wouldn't drive to Vaughn.  Just order it online during the $5 shipping promo if you choose BPS.

Wow!! i just read all the response to your question and jeez!!! this helps me a poop ton!!!  i appreciate everyones suggestions!!!  think im spending some $$$ at crappy tire this weekend!! wish i would have seen this thread long ago!
