hey.. anyone have any websites or books they would recommend? I'm typically interested mostly in their behavior, biology, and if possible something specific to great lakes trib steelhead.. would be more interested in things specifically related to angling but if there's some good info on their biology/ecology/behaviour that could be very useful in understanding these fish

I have "Trout Fishing In the Northeast- Skills and Strategies for the NE United States and SE Canada" from the freshwater angler series

I was pretty pissed when I opened the book and there was absolutely NOTHING about canada, blatant false advertising, and the book is mostly geared towards fly fishing, good thing i bought it used for 2$, still had to pay shipping off amazon though

My parents just got me a new book for a bday present, I'm pretty sure its called great lake stealhead, but I'll have to double check when I get home, it's really good, Ive only read about a third of it so far,( only had it for a week) but it talks about everything, even the different strains of steehead that were stocked in different tributaries and how everything affects them.

the net is good, but it has its downsides, for instance most of the articles available online are aimed at pacific northwest steelheaders, and even the resources i've found that talk about the North East specifically have been mostly geared to the US, even though they are great lake tribs.

i've been googling steelhead like a maniac since i've started, and a lot of the information is contradictory too

i still think this is a good idea for a thread, there are lots of hardcore steelheaders here and would be good to have a compilation of good books/websites

here is a link off ravens website on shotting patterns, for a noob like me this was particularly useful

I would recommend Jim Butler's book: "Steelhead Float Fishing: Modern Techniques & Methods". (specific to Ontario tribs)

Copies may be difficult to find, at least it was for me a few years ago when I bought mine.

Google "Jim Butler Steelheading Riverwood" and look for links.  I actually ran into Jim at Gagnons in Oshawa a couple of weeks ago and chatted with him for a while.

He was dropping off inventory for Gagnons and I ended up buying up most of the 4.5 gram floats that he brought in.  I left 2 packages behind for other customers and ended up buying the bulk of his deliver.

Jim lives in the east end so if you cannot find his book via regular channels, he might be able to get you one.

Great to hear! Now that you have Jim's book, you now need to check out his Riverwood products.  I now only pin with his floats and have used Raven, Drennan, Blackbird, and others in the past but always revert back to Riverwood.

Also, his jig flies and plastics are not back either!
