I would love to hear everyone's secret recipes for baits,

Mine include;

Lake Erie tribs

Salties
Whole shrimp
Cut bait
Sucker minnows

Lake Huron tribs

Cut bait
Rotten shrimp
Chicken hearts stuffed with cat food
Bread balls glazed with Vietnamese fish sauce.

I've been advised to chum the bait drop area with corn to bring in the carp, then in comes the cats to compete with the carp.

Never tried it but education and trial and error are key.

We chum off our dock all the time for the kids to watch. With corn I've had catfish, channel cats, carp, and gar pike coming in to check it out. Not to mention the massive cray fish that come out to eat the corn. Oh and I like to use a little cream corn with the nibblets. Gets the corn debris floating around. Nibblets sink

My to all time baits for channel cats are dead frog,
Or a 8 in dead minnow that has sat out in sun all day. Then cut about 2in of tail off.

Hey ChefMick
What time of year are they up the Huron tribs?
Thanks
Hey Homes, we would usually go around this time of year, and right into late june, I found they head back into the lake when high river temps decrease the amount of O2 in the water.

When fishing Channels anywhere, I just take a frozen Sardine or 2. 1 inch cubes on the hook and boom. Make sure to puncture the skin with your hook or you will get robbed tho.

Spinnerbaits...haha just kidding, but suprisingly enough ive caught a bunch of cats on spinnerbaits, what I usually use is the good old fashioned earthworm

Don't know that I would have put the "haha" after spinner baits. Channel Cats are a predator, not a bottom feeder like many think. As I fish the Grand often for Walleye, Bass, Trout, Pike and Channel Cats, I have caught them on everything. Spinners, spoons, jigs, I even had 1 take a Hula Popper at dusk a few years back. Not sure how many I have caught on a Mepps Black Fury, suffice it to say lots, the same goes for a Daredevel.

Alfie.
