yikes, got some people telling me to go ahead and load up heavier line, and now buck saying i'll snap the rod, im extra confused now...
gonna check out what the rod manufacturers themselves say because i suspect that I indeed can load up heavier line (otherwise why would shimano rods be rated TWICE, once for braid, and once for mono?)
also, I dont like how the two piece veritas/vendetta's are only rated up to 5/8 lures, I regularly throw one oz spoons and heavier spinners
was looking at a fenwick HMX or HMG, they are rated off the top of my head between 6-17 and 8-20 lbs, and 1/4-1-1/2 oz lures, these ratings are much closer to what im looking for

Doesn't really make sense to me either, as I said earlier I thought that rating was to keep the rod from breaking,
I've found generally rods/ratings to be very confusing, as there are no real set of standards and manufacturers seem to label/rate things based off their own specifications and not a universal set of ratings or something.
I haven't had the time yet but I wonder what the manufacturers will say, my guess is "if you exceed the line rating, you risk breaking the rod".
right now I have 30lb braid on an ugly stik i've had for over a decade and its only rated 6-15 lbs, I've really yanked it really hard and haven't managed to break it yet which confuses me even more (then again it's an ugly stik which apparently are indestructible.)

given that the max drag on most spinning reels is around 18 lbs, won't that keep the rod from snapping? assuming the rod is rated up to 18lb line

Honestly if the drag is set well you wont have to worry. The line diameter is a big factor. Heavier line and lures are not meant to be cast with lighter rods and vice versa...but since 20lb braid has the diameter and light weight of 6lb mono you can use it to cast lighter lures you would usually throw on the rods you're talking about.
Just don't go muskie fishing with it lol, and don't use the rod to rip off snags. Stick to fish the rod was meant to handle and grab the line with your hands or wrap it around something like a lighter or a paddle when you want to pull yourself off a snag.
Don't worry, 20lb braid on a M spinning rod is perfect. If you want to long bomb heavier lures maybe get something beefier like a MH but don't let the line rating hold u back.

thanks bassr, been doing a lot of reading on the topic the last couple of days and everything matches with what you've said.
another thing i'm nervous about now though is the lure rating.. my heaviest lures are 1 oz spoons, could I still throw these with a rod only rated up to 5/8 oz? I think i'd be risking it
I think the fenwick HMG or HMX would be a better choice for the lures I throw, 7'0, M, x-fast, 4-12 lb line, 1/4-1 1/4 oz lure rating, simply because they come in two piece where as there are no MH 2 piece spinning models from abu garcia

I would not throw a lure heaver then the rod rating. I learned the hard way and ended with a broken rod...

Dont wanna make the same mistake with the first expensive spinning rod I buy, already broke my okuma float rod this season, thanks for the headsup.. gonna grab the fenwick most likely and stay within the recommended lure rating, which shouldn't be too hard as its basically the range of the lures I own

As much as I love the veritas, get the rod that's right for you, and that rod sounds like the fenwick. ENJOY!

No problem. Let's hope we're both lucky in the bass/pike department, when the season opens.
