All,

I've been a member here for a number of months now. Admittedly I don't post all that often, but I do read mostly everything on this forum. Today though, I want to tell you about an iPhone app I developed that is finally ready for the world. See, I love to fish (as everyone here does!), but I also love software. Professionally, I'm a software engineer and I for a long while now I had this idea of marrying my love for angling with my love for software. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to do so and now I'm very excited to tell you about PRO Fishing Journal, which went live just recently.

In a nutshell, PRO Fishing Journal is a personal fishing logbook for your iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod).

It allows you to track the fish you caught, where you caught it, how you caught it etc. You can use that information as a personal reference and / or instantly share the pictures of your trophy with your friends via Facebook, twitter or email.

Here are some of the major features:

  • quickly and easily record your fish catches in as much or as little detail as you please
  • take pictures and share them on Facebook, Twitter or email with a single button click
  • Allow the device's built in GPS radio to capture the exact location of your catch. Conveniently, it also automatically names the body of water you are on!
  • Optionally organize your catches into Trips, which allows for even more data points, such as weather conditions, sunrise / sunset times, and the lunar phase.
  • for the really hard-core: export your recorded catches into a file format that you can load on your PC or MAC and edit in MS Excel

The app is absolutely FREE to download and try. This free version is fully functional, but limited to the recording of 3 catches. If you like the app, you can remove this restriction by purchasing an unlock code for $1.99. So please go ahead and download it. If you're reading this on your iPhone, you should be able to get to the app landing page directly by clicking here

I've attached some screenshots to this post so you can get an idea of what it looks like without jumping over to iTunes.

Lastly, I ask that you please take a moment to rate the application in iTunes. That rating is a massive factor in driving downloads!

If you have any questions, feel free to post here!

Thanks & I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks! There are actually a few more of these in the market already, but I like to think that PRO Fishing Journal is one of the better offerings!

Sadly, not at this time. I'll let you know if anything changes though!

No... all the data captured by users is stored only on that user's device. I don't see or have access to any of it. In fact, it would be illegal for me to collect that information without getting explicit consent to do so.

Thanks for your feedback!

Seems pretty cool. I'll download and check it out.

I use iFish Ontario. It's a pretty good app as well. They also have a catch log but it is an additional $2.99 to unlock it. I feel like it should be included since the app is already around $5. Why should you have to pay more to track your own catches?

Is this an app that other users can look at other users account to see their reports or is it private?

Currently, it's private only. The app does give you the ability to share your pictures on facebook & twitter though!

This app is very nice. Do you plan to add more feature like adding custom bait category? Removing unused one? Thanks

Hi!

Thanks for the feedback & suggestion. Yes, I do plan to push updates out periodically and I'll take a look at the effort involved to make the bait types system more dynamic.

Hi, your app is awesome. Best one for fishing on App Store, but could you add the ability to put decimals for length of fish and girth ? Like 17.75" inches not only 17 or 18 ". Thanks

you mean to delete something? You can do that by tapping the "edit" button on the top right of the list screen. You'll see that red pips appear on each list item. Tap the pip and a delete button appears. If I misunderstood you please correct me :)

Hi.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll look at getting that into a future update. Glad you like it!

I have a problem with the Export function.  The csv file has jiberish in it and does not show anything readable in Excel.  Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix?

Also here are some recommendations for updates:

1. Allow for insertion of a Trip Photo rather than using the biggest fish

2. I fish in the Gulf of Mexico and Location shows up as Unknown with the GPS Coordinates.  Allow for the Changing of the name to a Waypoint Name (or anything else desired).

3. If you don't have a scale when entering in fish but do include the length, use the length to determine biggest fish (since no weights were entered).

4. Provide decimals for length and girth so that you can add .25, .5, .75 measurements.
