I'm looking forward to hitting the water this Saturday along with many of you!

This will be my first year fishing opening day, and I'm wondering if any can offer advice about location. I'm intending to hit a West trib, fairly close to home, but I can't decide if it would be better to start closer to the lake or to try further north (that is, about 6-8km north of the lake).

I figure that further south likely means more traffic (other people), so I'm favouring the idea of a more northern entrance where my hope is that it would be quieter.  I don't have a ton of time (only a few hours on Saturday morning) so I really want to maximize my chances.

My question is: Do you think I would be wasting my time starting too far north? Do steelhead make it that far north and hang around? Sorry if these are dumb questions but most of my fishing experience is for warm-water species.

just make sure you don't bypass a dam on your way up and ecpect fish there as they usually get turned back by man made obstacles--google satellite will show you cleans lines of water to follow

Fishing is a very forgiving sport, try your luck worst case you change your approach on getting there. Not to sound like an on-line douche bag, but there wont be alot of people willing to give out information on an overfished river furthermore knowing there are guests online by the thousands. I am sure that would be throwing a steak to lions.

As I have said before. Opener is canceled this year!

No offence taken iJay. I totally get where you're coming from. I suppose I'm more just looking for validation, which I think I've received from remyboy's post (that is, as long as the river is free of obstacles, there ought to be fish there). Thanks!

My tactic is to get a busload of relatives and friends to a well-known pool and make it ours..armed with RPG and all ...lol..

Kidding aside, I have seen steelhead in the farthest, narrowest streams that form the main river/creek. Unless there is a major obstable, like a 10 ft height dam, then they can and will go far upstream

they'll get into the headwaters if they can, if you're looking at a dam, make sure to read the regs, as most are considered sanctuaries

All sarcasm aside. Some of the Trout have been in the rivers all winter waiting to spawn when the water hits the right temp. They will be as far up as they are allowed and not obstructed by man-made or natural blockages. You can feel free to PM me, let me know what trib you are hitting and I will offer some hints if Iknow the river. I'm mostly on western tribs.

Alfie.
