Good Morning All,

 

My name's John, and I'm new to OFF. I recently moved from Nova Scotia and am pumped to be fishing some new species and bodies of water.

 

I'm in Ottawa, and that seems to be an obstacle for someone who loves to fish brook trout. It seems I'll have to travel a bit, which sucks considering I had a good brookie spot in my NS backyard

 

I fish with lures(ususally when I bring the kids), but prefer fly fishing these days.

 

If anyone has any starting points for trout fishing near Ottawa, I'd be very grateful. I don't want anyone's honey holes: I like to work for my fish and will  hike& bushwack to avoid crowds and overfishing spots. Almost entirely c&r, so I won't clear out a treasured spot

 

Just some general areas to start would be awesome and I'll do the research.

 

I'm also a believer in cleanup of shores, so if there's a conservation group around Ottawa planning a cleanup, I'm in.

I am just getting used to the terminology of not naming rivers, and I love it. Back in NS, people would name their spots and they'd be over-run. Glad to see we're being careful

No clue about Ottawa but I know a great spot that a 3.5hr drive west of you LOL!!!

Welcome - I'm primarily on the fly as well, as are many others here. Based on the description of your fishing habits, it seems like you'll fit in very well, and I hope you enjoy your stay

 

In terms of Ottawa brookie waters, I'm not at all familiar. However if you travel a bit East (2-3 hours) I know a few spots. If I find any other areas closer to ya, I'll give you a shout!

I would recommend that you phone the MNR in your region and ask where they stock brookies or creeks that contain them. You may be surprised at the amount of information you receive from them.

Thanks for the advice and welcomes, folks. I will give MNR a shout, and I've already done some scouting of trout areas on the Gatineau side for trout. One spot seems to be near an unofficial nudist area!

 

Hope I don't hook something on the backcast. Ouch!

Hey John.

No shortage of Brookies in the Ottawa area. I can't help you with specific areas, I am not from the area, but I manage to find them everytime I work near there.

Google maps and a little leg work will put you on them, or just explore side roads and you will find them. I would suggest streams coming from the Algonquin high lands are good.

As a long time Brookie fisher I can say you are sitting on top of or very near a gold mine in the Ottawa area. I can't give you much more than that, I don't even know the names of the rivers I have found them in near Ottawa, but exploration has found me many

Welcome, john. Spent a couple weeks near Dartmouth fishing small mouth last summer. I'm more in the Hamilton area, but I make it up to haliburton forest and Algonquin a fair amount. These aren't TOO far from you. Pm me if you are heading a little west...

Like other have said I havent fished the area much but it sounds like you are on the right track, I'm sure you will be on fish soon.
