I have caught all my lakers ive ever caught in the whirlpool. Which kind of come in like blah. Can anyone compare Whirlpool lakers to any other lake lakers? I have caught lakers down there in all types of weather too. Winter, Spring, Fall etc... and they all are pretty much the same.

man im stocked for summer, efka your the best! Thanks so much for sharing. Hopefully I can convince my dad to get out on simcoe, he doesnt want to try it because its too big and we have never fished there before.... but THATS THE FUN trying new places and techniques.
Only thing is...our 12ft inflatable with 3.5hp motor can only be safely used in under 15km winds lol...
Scugog it is for me this weekend, maybe NEXT weekend I will see you on simcoe.
I havnt been able to find any good depth charts of the ENTIRE lake simcoe...can someone recommend a link?
I would be extremely careful with a boat like that in water like Simcoe. If you were to head out in laker grounds I would only go out on a calmest days and even then I would probably stick to the bays. If the wind was to pick up and change direction it could potentially push you out into the open lake without enough power to get back in. Not saying you can't use it in that like but I would just be very cautious. This is a good site for wind forecasts http://www.windfinder.com/forecast.

I haven't got any out of the whirlpool but I found with laters the ones over 10 or 12 pounds give a better fight than the little guys. The smaller ones sometimes wouldent even pull line out and I could just reel em right up. From the pics I have seen the lakers from the whirpool they are normally under 12 pounds? some 6-8 pounds I have got don't fight much

you can fish for lakers in your inflatable for sure. lots of guys head out to laker grounds in their kayaks, just use common sense and don't go out on a windy day and you'll be fine. i mean, in lots of spots "laker grounds" are only 500 - 750m off shore.
as for how lake trout fight, all the ones i've ever hooked up have been champions. long drag-screaming runs and plenty of fight. that goes for fish in the 5-6lb range and 10+ as well. that said, i've only ever fished simcoe lakers in the deep water so that could have something to do with it. perhaps in the niagara they spend alot of time battling currents and such and aren't so strong.

Hey Efka would you say a sit on top kayak is the way to go? I'll be using it for rivers, small lakes and maybe around the mouths of rivers during the salmon run. Do you by chance have a pic of your overall setup?

100% sit on top.
not much set up on my kayak; portable fishfinder in the front and wet mount for the ducer inside the hull, precision pak behind me. i have anchor troley on one side. the rest of the stuff like food and cart goes inside.

the problem with flasher is you will play with it more adjusting every time you drift than fish.
buy elite 4x and sell the flasher in winter. you have a good flasher will have little loss. and when winter comes you can get lowrance portable pack for ice fishing.

hmmm that is a good idea. I almost sold it last year for the same as what I paid for it because I bought it on the boxing day sale at Radioworld. I might just throw it up on kijiji now to see if there are any bites. Paid 500 for it taxes in, anyone want it for 450? Less than 10 days on the ice!

once you get kayak and hook few lakers, i doubt you will go to the east creeks. i haven't touched my pin in 2 years now.

You like them that much? I enjoyed the 10+ pound ones but many under that wouldn't even pull line for me. I regretted taking 6 weeks off of steelhead for ice fishing after the winter. I swear I have caught 3-4 pounds bows that fought harder than some 12 pound lakers, I use much lighter line for the lakers too.

one thing i noticed they pull way harder in summer than winter. but even in winter they give a good fight. even dozer, a hardcore steelheader, had some concerns about his aventa

I was talking about ice season. I was on the ice for Jan and part of Feb with no time on the river in that time. I haven't got any in the summer yet, I have the boat all set up with riggers but I have only had it out three times this season....so busy.

The jigs I used all winter were straighten out, the snaps bent, split rings opened. 8lb fluoro leader max size used when stealheading was changed to 12lb maxima mono. Any my reel still screams.

very interesting, For steelhead I will run 6 or 8 floro min when floating. I used 14 lb braid with a 6lb floro leader all winter for lakers but I would think you would need more heavy line for the summer. Not to say I didn't enjoy catching them.

I found the lakers were a blast through the ice so I can only imaging how fun they would be in the summer while on a small kayak. I cant see myself putting away the pin and focusing on lakers though, if anything i'll be using the pin!
