Hi all. After browsing some fishing discussions on this forum from my cell phone on breaks at work; I finally decided to make an account. There were just too many times when I wanted to contribute to a discussion!

It seems like there is a really nice and knowledgeable group of people here. I'm looking forward to talking about fishing with you all.

I currently reside in the small town of Plattsville (just outside of Kitchener and New Hamburg). I have only been here since May, but it's nice that the Nith River is a short walk away from me. This is the first time I have ever tried river fishing, and it is quite different than fishing from a boat in a small lake, or off a shoreline of a pond or lake. I am hoping to get the hang of river angling so I may enter the Grand River Bass Derby next year.

Fish on.

Welcome to the site! What species do you mainly target? What gear do you use?

In the past I would target pike on lakes. But for the first time, this year I am solely focused on bass for now. Really trying to learn how they feed and what works for them. So far stick baits have worked best for me, wacky or Texas rigged. I want to to try jigging for bass soon too. Have attempted a bit of top water, but only with minimal results.

Try using crankbaits! They are bass catching machines. :D

Thanks hamiltonangler.

I have tried cranks a couple of times in the river and caught one small rock bass. And another monster grabbed the bait right as it was surfacing and booked it to the bottom I couldn't even pull it up since I had my drag fairly loose. But after about 10 seconds he let go... Then a few casts later I snagged and lost the lure lol. I find it risky using crank baits in the river just because it's so easy to snag!

You can get some good crankbaits fairly cheap that are shallow divers. Try crankbait brands such as bomber, cotton cordell and rebel.
