I was planning a trip to lake ontario for my boy friend to go salmon fishing. We have never been there and its quite a long trip so I was wondering what is the best time of year to fish for salmon there.

the derby has already started. 40+ lbs fish was caught and it's in the first place now.

right now the fish are starting to school together, staging up by the rivers and r waiting for the cooler waters, over then next few weeks the fishing will pick up. by the middle of August it will be almost at the peak, hens will be looking to fill up on bait fish before spawning as will the males. come September they are going to be ready to enter the mouths of the rivers if water levels are up and cold they will be in the rivers mid sept.
if you plan a boat trip out on the lake the next 4-5 week will be good fishing, after that it all depends on the weather, rivers and temps.

Well stated, I totally agree with your opinion.

we had a killer day on my buddy's charter boat last Friday, I think it should only be getting better from now until mid-August in the Lake. If you dont have plans already I can give you his contact information. We hit tons of fish in the 25-30lb range, no derby size fish but it was a blast. It was a good thing we were out on a big boat as I dont know how the guys in the 17' aluminum boats dealt with the 6-8' rollers all day long and the odd 10' roller came through as well. They were still catching fish so good on them I guess but I wouldnt want to be out there in that boat with those type of conditions.
If you are going out on Lake Ontario near Toronto watch out for East winds, they are deadly!

NADO - can you pass along your buddy's charter info? I'd always wanted to get out on a charter and catch the deep lake salmon. Looking for a good steelhead guide if anyone knows of one as well. I'm in the KW area.
Thanks!

Typical Lake Ontario salmon charter, we're looking at what, about 5 bills plus tip???
So you want to bring four guys at least, which is actually pretty darn cheap when you think about how far a hundred and a quarter goes these days.

I've only been guided a few times, but for the amount of knowledge I got in return a healthy tip was the easiest money I ever spent.
