How can I get my daughter a musky on Rice Lake?

We're going on vacation -- not being familiar too familiar with Rice, I need some pointers. My 13 y.o. daughter has been bugging to get a musky for 2 years. I figure we're starting out in the right section of the lake being as it's named Musky bay.. LOL, anyone with any helpful advice, or pointers.. I would greatly appreciate any help to at least give her a fighting chance at bagging her first Musky. I've hit a few in my day but not on Rice. LOL.

I heard of some musky advice once for that particular water body. I have never tried it myself but hey, maybe it is worth a shot.

The advice was to run your boat slow enough so that you get an alright rooster tail wake (white water). Cast your musky lure way behind the rooster tail and troll. The advice was that the musky learnt in that lake to follow boats for a free meal. This trolling technique may produce some strikes.

It may not be true but any advice is good advice.

At this point I'm going in blind, so any pointers are worth a try I guess. Hopefully some more experienced forum members will be willing to help out as my experience at Rice is very limited.

Anybody else with any "Pointers", hints, tips ... or hotspots?? PM me if you know of an area I should start in! All assistance is appreciated.

I can help you out, If you are a lazy fisherman and like to troll then I would suggest using baits like a 8" believer or grandma in a perch pattern, both of these baits come in straight and jointed options. During the summer months I would troll from 4mph and faster, it may seem fast but this is what will trigger strikes. While trolling try doing sharp turns with the boat to change lure speed along weed edges that lead into deep water 20'-30'. If you want to cast then I would suggest a few baits, a great topwater bait is called a topraider in a dark colour seems to work well, you can also use an inline bucktail like a Mepps Musky killer in black and orange or perch pattern, another option is a large spinner bait from 1-4 oz and once again black/orange/ perch patterns seem to produce well. These are probably your best chance at getting a musky.

Thanks Nick, I'm definitely not the "TROLLING" type ... I suffer from ADHD, and fishing seems to be the only thing that helps my mind relax. Definitely casting is my thing, trying different retrieves, switching up from jerk baits, to plastics until I find the proper presentation for the area. I'll definitely try some musky killers and maybe some larger spinnerbaits.

Just so members are aware - the time frame I'll be on Rice will be 1-2 days between the 7th-12th of this month. As I do realize that season and weather patterns have a great deal to do with fish location and feeding habits.

Could a moderator possibly move this to a more appropriate forum for me please?

I am all over rice lake, in fact I will be up there tonight until tomorrow night. As for musky Rice Lake may not be the best place to go hook into them. They are not as heavy in population there. Try to find areas like flats where there is about 3-5 feet of water and try casting top waters. Or you can try casting the 8"believer baits on points of islands. The water of Rice Lake really only goes to about 15 feet maximum. I have had a couple times where in one of my fishing locations for bass, the same musky has controlled the water here and twice now has taken a bass from me! Can't tell ya where as this is a tournament spot for me but even still. I would try fishing and casting lures around the hastings area for more musky.

There are plenty of areas over 20' deep on Rice lake

I've had luck casting in maximum 5 feet of water in the morning around 7am. Once the day progresses they seem to move deeper.

Any last minute words of advice that might give me even better odds would be appreciated, I leave tomorrow morning... will be on rice for Thursday/Friday. Heading up to Bon Echo for a few days, fishing rice for a couple... sounds like a helluva week. Already have no problems hitting cats, crappie, walleye on rice but Musky tips would be appreciated so my daughter can fight her first musky lol.
