What I like to catch: Largemouth

 

Why: Never caught a smallmouth

Smallies - cause they fight hard

Largies - they have a fight all their own

 

enjoy the light bite - with a hard fight!!!

Smallmouth cuz they fight way harder and are a more eautiful fish in my opinion

i love the fight of small mouth but the size and availability of lagies especially down south in florida

Smalies... Much more sportier fighters, more acrobatic, and more challenging to find.

 

I love my Lariges too, however They're like bullhead.. They can be found in just about any waterbodies, I've caught them in anything from muddy creeks, to storm drainage ponds.

lol when i was in disney land in florida and i saw a small fountain the size of a bathtub not connected to anything else with a 4lb largie in it

Smallmouth have that athleticism that largemouth do not. They are known for their acrobatic shows. Largemouth have a great heavy pull in the weeds and fishing top water for the good old bucketmouth is also quite the show. If you were in the states fishing okeechobee is where you want to be for the legendary bass. I got a chance to go with a sponsor down for a week to Florida and fish the lake for 3 days with a guide. Amazing bass fishing at a whole new level. Extra Heavy rods, big heavy punch weights, plastic creature baits, 7lbs+ bass all day every day.

For me, the smallie is the more attractive. I've been fishing largies for so long, that I don't find it a challenge, smallies will criticize your lure much more and more wary, just my experience.

Largemouth hit lures harder but the fight is short lived. Small mouth may hit lures unnoticed at times but will take you to their deathbed.

Caught more large mouths then small mouth, but the small mouth have been much more memorable on the whole.

Like I said .. They can be found anywhere!  lol....

But defintely make for a fun outing in those local storm ponds when driving an hour to target smallies in the Grand isn't an option

all the points mentioned above are so very very true.

 

and i too like SMB for the reasons that they are harder to locate in my usual fishing radius of lakes and so when i do hook into one it feels special. and darn, that fight! the last 1.5 pounder i caught last week took me left, right, up and down for what seemed like an eternity and gave me some nervous moments when i saw the bend in the rod as he went under the boat.

 

and the various colourations and patterns of smallies make each one seem so different.

 

but ya, both gorgeous looking creatures and both pack a hell of a punch.

Largemouth. Big ones are common, and they do aerials 90% of the time, which makes a challenge and is neat to see. They tend to move from side to side when hooked making us have to be really on the ball and keeping them from throwing the hook.

Smallmouth in a river are king. In good condition, even a 12" fish will jump a foot out of the water several times. A sixteen will make you work, he will know every log and rock. Anything bigger than that is going to be HIGHLY INTERESTING.

 

Note that this is with a 5 weight fly rod and 4 or 6 lb tippet, not some silly broomstick with 50 pound braid that the "sports" use down in Florida.

 

Largemouth are the most over-rated fish in existence.

I would not agree with that. Largemouth fight just as well as smallies IMO. They jump too, and swim like crazy around a half circle infront of you. If you get a 4 lb + largie you will feel something on the end of your line.
