When fishing for salmon from shore, what does everyone usually use? setup, line, bait and lure wise? I've got a pair of waders and will be heading down to lake ontario very soon. What time do you like to go at, and does your bait differ based on the time of day?

If casting into open water from piers:

7' rod

15lb braid with 3' of 15lb mono leader

casting spoon of various color and size

If fishing in river:

7' rod

20-25lb mono

float and jig

I use heavier setup in river because I dont have to cast that far, and there isnt much room for a drawn-out fight if theres a lot of people fishing. For open water set up, I like to use lighter line for extra casting range and more line on spool. This year im going to try going down to 10/12lb line for open water.

I fish during evenings from 5-9 PM if im after salmon.

25lbs in a river?

All my fishing life I have been using 6-10lbs test on Salmon. More in it for the sport as appose to keeping. Don't care much for the taste of most fish.

Piers

10' medium rod

12-15lbs line

Spoons and pink marshmellows.

Ya, when you fish shoulder to shoulder, you need to bring the fish in quickly.

Casting from piers I use a 9 foot rod with 20-30 pound braid and a 12 pound mono leader using spoons

Awesome, thanks for the insight guys! I've got a 7ft rod with 20lbs braid line and 10lbs mono line. Still having trouble finding a good knot to tie in the mono and braided. I've also heard different color spoons for different colors in the water? What color spoons are you using, and what weights?

I would use a double unit knot when tieing the mono and braid together. Here's a link to show how to tie it: http://www.netknots....double-uni-knot

float fishing up river you want a 11.5-13' rod (13' is best) with 12lb mono mainline and 6-10lb lead.

Pier fishing I currently use an 8.5' rod though I would prefer a 9.5'. I have 10lb braid and use 10-12lb leaders. I would use 20lb braid and 15-20lb leader if I had a bigger reel.

off piers i use a 11ft shimano convergence with 45lb braid mainly chucking spoons

in rivers i use either my 6'9 field and stream baitcaster with 80lb line ( so i can get the fish in quick and back into the river quick so it can spawn ) or if i wanna keep the fish i use my

6wt fly rod

or my 7ft shimano convergence with 30lb briad

or my 7ft shimanno sellus light with 8lb mono all work for me,

this year im gonna try finding a stick and tying string to it, im serious ive caught bass like that

9ft - 11ft rod. 12lb - 15lb line. the initial hook up is key. when they run towards you. the chance of losing them is higher if you're using a shorter rod.

Why wouldnt you use your 11' convergence in the rivers??? 11' makes alot more sense than a 6'9... and 80lb line in the rivers!! gonna be tough to hook a fish unless ur gettin flossay!

In all seriousness though its hard to see the logic behind some of those setups...80lb braid on your 6'9, is it a shark rod or something? You wont be able to put enough pressure on the line to put the 80lb to work before breaking your rod. 7' light rod for salmon???

Not trying to pick on ya but those are some wild setups there lol.

well i am a weird guy but ya the baitcaster is for muskie and when i go saltwater fishing, my bad my 7ft is a medium light if im using less than 12 lb line i use the longer rod on piers so i can cast those xtra couple yards and for not using it in rivers i fish small tribs and creeks which arent usually more than 20 ft across and ive never had problems with my 7footer im looking for a 8-9 ft hybrid i can just take everywhere instead of having a million rods

If you're not using spoons, what size of hook would you use when using eggs, or any other type of bait? a barbed hook or un-barbed? weights?

and if you're using spoons, will you tie your line right to the lure or use a swivel snap attached to the spoon?

snap swivel if you're using spoons. size #6 or #8. but had those size hooks straighten out by a 15lb salmon on PMS.

I honestly never seen a hook being bent by a fish before. How does that happen?

Add a treble to the 80lb braid and the setup is complete.

Ive done it lots. Those little red daiichi hooks that are great for trout have been bent open by many salmon on the end of my line and even a few steelhead. Have you ever gotten a snag out by bending the hook open? Same idea here.

I use an 8.5 shimano clarus or a 9.5 berkley specialists baitcast rod with either an abu garcia ambassadeur 6500 or 5601 level wind with 12 pound mono on it.  I usually toss 3/4 ounce cleos or Pete Spoons, also J13's or Canadian Wigglers later in the season.

Good Luck!
