I remember seeing salmon move out of the way to avoid light line. They seem to be just as line shy as steelhead.

i have drifted bags through a big pool of salmon(easily 50 plus fish) and have watched all the salmon in the path of the line move out of its way.

So your plan is to fight the fish with light line till it dies, then keep it to bury it as fertilizer?  

What happens if your "light line" breaks after you've tired the fish half to death? If you're planning to keep the fish wouldn't it make more sense to use stronger line as you're less likely to lose it, and the fact that you would be able to land it faster?

Its the thrill of fighting and landing a large fish on a light line that makes me want to do it. I dont want to land it faster. If it dies then it goes into the ground, if not, its back in the water.

 

If you dont like it, dont do it. Theres nothing wrong with me challenging myself with lighter line.

Your logic seems flawed, unless you only intend on fishing for your limit... Once you have 2, technically you would be responsible for the rest surviving..

I respectively disagree.  What you're doing is careless and irresponsible.  I'd rather you not follow the "norm"  and use 100lb braid.

Land em quick/release them so they can spawn instead of killing them for no reason.  Even if you release one after tiring it that much, the chances of it's survival are much lower...just because it swims off, doesn't mean it will survive after being exhausted.

Land em quick/release them so they can spawn instead of killing them for no reason.  Even if you release one after tiring it that much, the chances of it's survival are much lower...just because it swims off, doesn't mean it will survive after being exhausted.  

 

If you want to ensure its survival, dont fish it. Why dont you stop fishing for any fish? what if you accidentally kill it?

glad i will probably never see you on the rivers...otherwise i would probably cut your line....its not only very disrepectful to the fish....its disrepectful to every angler fishing around you
