8 wt for salmon and steel. 9 for just salmon. Remember tho, a 200$ reel turns into a 500$ setup really easily.

in my humble opinion everyone goes wy to high in weights--its also not just weights--if you have a faster rod it has a bit more backbomne that a soft noodle also the length matters a lot in what the rod can handle--if you can spend the money a 8 and an 8 makes sense IMO--a lot of really good fly guys use 5-7 wts for a lot of fish including huge salmon and wild steel 7 wt 10ft you can do a lot man--mad what you think?

I like the 7wt 10' idea.  That way on the steelhead outing I can borrow it and try it out.

The casting instructor I used is telling me 7wt 10' as a "fall fishing" rod.  But I am up here in Gods country so millage may vary

Sometimes longer rods get whippy. Make sure if you get a 7 it has some serious stiffness near the cork.

Have you weighed that salmon? Or are you using a broomstick with a cork on it?
