That leader is a problem for trout fishing. Get a 9 ft 6 x tapered leader. It lays down nicer and won't smack the water hard.

I was directed to Angling Specialties in Toronto to build a rod.  If I can find a mentor up here that is what I plan on doing

going lighter weightmeans risking breaking your rod....unless you like spending money replacing broken gear, best to go a little heavier and be safe

Leaders are indeed at bass pro.  about 3 or 4 bucks a piece.  I would get a 3 pack for 7.00 though.

They should be at any tackle shop that does fly fishing or a bit of fly fishing tackle. Stay with a brand like scientific anglers or rio. Quality leaders run from about 5.99-8.99$. BTW, the bigger the number of leader (i.e. 6x) the smaller diameter it is. So a 0-3 x would be for salmon, with a 7 or 8 x for small resi trout. If you think there might be a 20 inch resi trout where you're fishing, go with a 6 x, if they are small then 7 or 8 x is perfect.

get 3 leaders and some tippet material.....when you run through the tippet on the tapered leader, tie on a new tippet...no use spending 3.50 on a leader to only use 8 inches of it

What I am learning the hard way is having a 6x tapered leader really makes it hard to turn over those 1/0 frogs or weighted woolly buggers.  So I first took a tapered leader and shortened it up.

Now I carry 7 or 8 leaders of various size in my pack.  But still can not turn over those big bugs
