8-10lb for steelhead and trout depending on the type of line I use. (e.g. 8lb p-line CXX has the diameter of most 10lb lines)
For salmon 12lb is the norm for me (not necessary, but allows me to run stronger leaders without blowing up my mainline)

I use same line for salmon and steel "SUFIX PROMIX" 10lb. Only with salmon i use 8lb leader. for Steel 4 or 6lb
I have try them all and this one is the best no twists or in-bedding when you get big fish. CLEAR

X2 on the Promix either 8 or 10 main 4 or 6 leader, partial to the Drennan fluoro leader

400YD for $6.00, it is still cheaper than Raven. Even if is more expensive you don't have to replace your line every 2nd or 3rd outing.
Raven is excellent line when is fresh on the reel after one day of heavy use it is not the same anymore.

Anyone running 8lb promix + 6lb drennan have their mainline break before the leader?

Nope. Are you sure it was not nicked or damaged?

And to all those with twisting issues swivel above and below your float and you will never have a twisting issue !!
Why would you use swivel above float? Just below is enough.

I use 10lb Berkeley braid !!! Supper light , does not twist up like mono , get really long casts with no effort and you can keep the line up off the water on long drifts without pulling the float out of your run !!!!
I will never go back to mone main lines again
It is personal preference i like feel of the mono.
